26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 16, 1985 Team that never quit wins hard fought series in seven games The Port Perry Mal- mont Farm Atoms are the Eastern Ontario following a - champions bitterly fought victory . Sunday afternoon at the Scugog Arena over a tough squad from Napanee. The Atoms won the match 3-1 to take the series four games to three on a superb team effort that saw the team fight its way back from a three to one deficit in games at one point in the series. The two teams went toe to toe in Sunday's game and it wasn't until late in the final period that the Port Perry Atoms broke a 1-1 deadlock and then added an insurance marker in- to an empty Napanee net "to take the win and the series. In the first period the Napanee Club wasted no time as they got onto the scoreboard early with a blistering slap shot which caught the top cor- ner of the net on a shot that can only be describ- ed as perfect. At the 6:27 mark the Green Machine got on track as Jason Cochrane scored on a unassisted effort to even the score at 1-1. In the second period both clubs skated hard and displayed hockey skills that coaches of higher level teams would be proud of. It was very difficult for the fans and coaches to realize that this was an Atom level game as these two clubs were playing their very best. The period ended in a 1-1 tie and set the stage for a tense third period. The third period con- tinued with the same style of fast and rugged hockey as both clubs knew that this was their final period of the season. Finally at the 4:24 mark, Brad Moase collected the winning Malmont captain Jason Cochrane, with some of his team-mates, accepted the Eastern Ontario Atom plaque from OMHA rep Wayne Parker after the team won a goal assisted by Jeff Parry and Jason Cochrane after some very hard checking around the Napanee net. With only 9 seconds re- maining on the clock, and the Napanee goalie on the bench in favor of "the extra attacker, Jason. Cochrane found a hole in the defence and slipped through to collect his se- cond goal of the game (94th of the year) unassisted as the Green Machine went on to defeat the Napanee Club 3-1 and win the Eastern Ontario Championship. Game 5 On Wednesday April 10, the Malmont Farm Atoms hosted Napanee in their 5th meeting in the series. The Napanee Club only needed one game to claim the cham- pionship but the Green Machine forced the 6th game by defeating Napanee 3-2 by display- ing a good team effort with lots of heart. In the first period, Jody Logan opened the scoring on a picture play with the assist going to Lindsay Parry. In the se- cond period Jason Cochrane scored the on- ly goal with the assist go- ing to Brad Moase and Steve Laird. In the third period Duane Empringham not- ched the winning goal with the assist to Steve Laird. This proved to be a good solid effort by the whole team and ap- peared to give the team the confidence needed to go back to Napanee. The Green Machine would not have won this game had it not been for the solid goaltending of Shawn Larocque who time after time stopped shots from all angles completely frustrating the Napanee Club. Game 6 On Saturday April 13, the Malmont Farm gruelling seven game series with Napanee. Port Perry won the final game 3-1 in front of a large crowd Sunday afternoon at the Scugog Arena. (See story for details) Atoms travelled to Napdnee to play in this very important 6th game. With the series 3 games - 2 in favor of the Napanee, the Port Perry club had their backs to the wall. When the final siren blew, the Green" Machine had defeated the home town club 4-2 which tied the series and forced the 7th and deciding game back in Port Perry. This game proved most devastating for the Napanee Club as it was the first time this season they had been defeated on their home ice. In the first period Jody Logan opened the scor- ing with the assist to Jeff Parry. With only 1:49 re- maining in the period, Jason Cochrane scored from Jody Logan. In the second period the Napanee Club closed the gap by scoring early but with only 11 seconds showing on the clock, Jeff Parry banged in the third Port Perry goal assisted by Steve Laird and Brad Moase. In the third period again the Napanee Club forced the play and scored early to close the gap. With only 39 seconds remaining on the clock, and the Napanee goalie on the bench in favor of the extra attacker, Jeff Parry found the hole on a nice unassisted effort to end the game 4-2. This game tied the series and set the stage for a 7th and ; deciding game back in Port Perry.
