On Sun- day, April 21, this historical event was brought to fruition publicly with the formal installation of officers " immediately following the 11:00 a.m. mass at Immaculate Conception ' Church, Port Perry. The Knights of Colum- bus is a fraternal Catholic Men's organiza- tion originally founded by. Father Michael J. McGivney in New Haven, Connecticut in 1882. The name 'Knights of Columbus' was chosen because it was felt, as a Catholic group, it should relate to Christopher Columbus, the Catholic discoverer of America. The 'Knights' ' creativity is manifested in numerous programs and projects directed to the benefits of their fellowman. Today, the interna- tional society includes over 1.3 million Catholic men in some 7,000 coun- cils who have dedicated themselves to the ideals of Columbianism: chari- ty, unity, fraternity and patriotism.
