More than a hundred peace workers from communities stretching from Lake Simcoe to Lake Ontario met at Port Perry United Church Saturday, April 13 in an Operation Dismantle sponsored a one day seminar called the Com- munity Peace Move- ment: Working Together. And while participants had a broad range of sub- + jects to choose from, all relating to peace, most chose to sit in on an after- noon workshop called Talking With Children: Soothing Nuclear Nightmares, led by research psychologist Susan Goldberg from Sick Children's Hospital in Toronto. In an introduction to the seminar, Linda Jackson of Port Perry said, "For the first time in the history of man, our EVERYDAY .LOW PRICE 20 KG CATTLE MANURE 2.99 EVERYDAY LOW PRICE PATCH & GROW 2 KG LAWN REPAIR KIT 1.99 " EVERYDAY LOW PRICE pn 2.99 EVERYDAY LOW PRICE 3.99 2 KG COMPOST GENERAL PURPOSE EVERYDAY LOW PRICE GENERAL PURPOSE peace' dine markets... of fine foods COATED 2 KG EVERYDAY LOW PRICE Nuclear drea by seminar at workshop children are growing up facing the awesome possibility that their world is going to blow up right in front of their faces." Although the tone to the rest of the hour and a half workshop wasn't so grim, all those who took part had their own stories to tell about children and their reac- tion to the possible threat of nuclear destruction. One woman said her daughter used the threat as an excuse to get out of homework or household chores, because if we're going to get blasted, it doesn't matter anyways." Ms. Goldberg said it was important for children to face up to nuclear facts, but not to dwell on them or be negative. "If we really thought about it every minute of every day, we'd never leave the closet or the house we'd be so frightened." The idea, she said, is to listen to children' s fears about nuclear war and -answer their questions as honestly as possible 6.99 THESE SPECIALS AVAILABLE ONLY IN: Highway 47 S., Uxbridge Monday & Tuesday 9-6 P.M Wed Thurs. & Fri. 99 PM. Saturday 8:30-6 P.M. without scaring them or being negative. "You have to point out to them the positive things," she explained. "'Like, they're not alone. Lots of other people do care about this issue. It isn't a bad thing to say, yes, I really share your concern. You're right to worry about this is sometimes a better thing to say than 'Go play with your Leggo set.' "' The main thing, she stressed, is being positive. If a child is wor- ried about nuclear war, explaining about the peace movement and step in the soothed what he or she can do to help is often a soothing right direction. "A lot of our energy is going into stopping what we don't like, stopping what we don't want," she said. "You have to worry, but with the worry should come a heightened sense of op- timism. If you're willing to accept the negative things, like war, then the positive things, like peace, will come along UN CIN aA AS VLNRSAN NAA Do it now ... before the rush begins.
