And they also claimed the prize for the largest single fish in the tourna- ment, a nice walleye that tipped the scales at 2.16 kgs. This will be the third season that Coverly and Gallant have been fishing competitively, and they'll remember Lake Scugog, for this was the first derby they've won. Gallant said conditions on the lake were a little difficult for fishing with rain and strong winds, and the team had to cut their fishing back by three hours on Sunday when the motor on their boat conked out: "It was quite a weekend. We rescued a couple of guys who fell over-board and then had the motor problems. But we were really pleased to win this," he said after the final weigh-in Sunday afternoon. Coverly and Gallant said the pickerel were "hitting pretty good," and they had the best luck using their. own hand-made yellow jigs tipped with a bit of worm. It was the first tourna- ment victory for the pair which attracted 20 teams. (See story) WHERE DID IT ALL GO! A big chunk of it probably went to the government. You can't dodge ( taxes. Second place in the competition was claimed by the well known pro fishing team of Wayne and Bob Isumi who managed to snag 4.2 kgs, of pickerel over the two days. Bob Isumi is the host of his own TV fishing pro- gram and he had a cameraman filming the event over the weekend that may be on the air later this fall. The derby was hosted by Goreski's Marina on Scugog Island, and while organizers were a little disappointed that the number of teams was just 20, they hope to stage another event next year. Coverly and Gallant say they hope the Scugog Derby is an omen of things to come for them this summer as they will be entering at least eight more professional tour- naments over the next few months. Each team is allowed to keep six pickerel per day and the fish are kept alive in water wells in the specially out-fitted boats. All fish are released into the lake after weigh-in.
