6 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 11, 1985 Al Lawrence defends his Party's budget by Allan Lawrence - M.P. Durham - Northumberland Turning a nation's economy around is about the most difficult task one can imagine. Yet that is exactly what federal Finance Minister Michael Wilson set out to do with his chatterbox by John B. McClelland I can hardly wait to see if the largest pancake ever is made and flipped on that weekend. That's right, one of the events will be an attempt to break the old Guiness Records for the largest pancake, 60 pounds and some six feet in diameter. Keep it in mind, and bring on the maple syrup and coffee. 843 KING STREET WEST, OSHAWA -- 433-0055 Dealer for 7-11 PRODUCTS Canada's Largest Pool Manufacturer. features: -- 25 year liner warranty -- Lifetime warranty on steel products. -- Hayward Super pumps CRE -- 3500 Ib. strength concrete in -- All forming of decks with 2 x 6 matenal SHOP & COMPARE! Certainly it1s a very definite break with the recent past. As lp ed out in one of these Ottawa Reports a little more than a year ago, our national debt has become a financial crisis. It amounted then to $5,200.00 for every man, woman and child One third of your tax dollars were being used Just to pay the interest on that debt. It's been claimed that a mounting deficit 1s needed to create jobs. Yet, at the same time, more than one million people are seeking work. Now, with this budget, we have an agenda for breaking the vicious cir- cle of high unemploy- ment and spiralling na- tional debt. It's being "done in three ways: * by encouraging private initiative and productive investment, * by managing govern- ment more effectively, and * by gaining control of Again! (From page 5) tle brother is down play- ing near that corner when you hear the smash, it scares you. This matter has been brought up at council meetings, but the council has 'determined' that a stop - sign is not necessary. All that the people of Bigelow Street want is a simple little oc- tagonal sign that says STOP, on the corner of Bigelow and Paxton. Can council manage that before someone is killed" Yours truly, John Woodard, ta concerned 12 year old), Bigelow St., Port Perry. These measures clear- ly demonstrate a new at- titude at Ottawa. The personal capital gains exemption is designed to. let the people, and not the government, choose where to invest their money and how to best create new jobs. Unlike its immediate predecessors, the Pro- gressive . Conservative government is putting its own house in order first, by cutting $4.4 billion from the federal debt this year. But savings from more efficient ad- ministration are not enough to end the debt spiral. To do that, we also. must increase economic growth, cut government spending, and increase taxes at least temporarily. . These tax increases have been made as fair- ly as possible. All Cana- dians will be asked to contribute, but there is adequate protection for those in greatest need. Mr. Wilson's budget was carefully crafted after extensive consulta- tions with Canadians in all walks of life. To be "MEN'S WEEK" understood properly it must be viewed as a whole. It asks individuals and corporations to pay their fair share, while using the tax system to pro- mote economic develop- ment and the resulting creation of new jobs. It provides for reduc- tions in federal programs and spending, at the same time increasing fupding for job creation and training programs and raising the child tax credit. It improves tax assistance for charities, artists and the disabled. Last September the Mulroney government received an overwhelm- ing mandate from the people of Canada to make changes. Now, through its first budget, the government has begun making those changes needed for the rest of the 1980's. These are tough times, we all know, and some tough measures were necessary. But we have started now to build upon our strengths for a better tomorrow. As a politician, I know as well as anyone the risks in raising taxes, and I certainly won't en- joy paying the increases any more than you will. But in this case the government had no honest alternative. Personally, I was most impressed by the deep understanding and the sensitive Be Hearing approach displayed by the Minister of Finance last Thursday. Within a comparative- ly short time, I'm sure, we all will begin to ap- preciate and to benefit from the realism he has restored to our nation', economic affairs. c Aid (entre ¢f Port Perry Dennis J Hogan ann Hearing Aid Consultant Or E Mannen's Office - 24 Water St S Lakeview Plaza.
