pres 8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 11, 1985 Generous donations for the victims of killer tornado People in Port Perry really do care! by Sandra Hamilton On Wednesday June 5th, | was given the sur- prise of my life. I'was always critical of Port Perry, thinking nobody really gave a damn about other people. © WOW! WAS | WRONG! On Wednesday | was driving to my mother's home about 9:00 a.m. listening to C.F.T.R. Their morning man "Tom Rivers" was doing a radio marathon for the Barrie Tornado victims, in co-operation with the Ontario Tornado Relief Fund It was then the thought hit me. Why doesn't Port ; do something to help as well. . So about then | had ar- rived at mom's house and knowing mom was involved in any society they are doing in Port, | asked her if she knew if anything was happen: ing"? Do you have time for a coffee?" That's when it really hit so | responded 'Hey mom' Do you think that if I went around Port, to the merchants, and ask- ed for money for this thing that C.F.T.R. is do- ing, do you think I'd get any results?' And my typical mom said back to me '| don't know for sure, do you want a coffee?" I finally said no to the coffee and told mom I was off to see what might happen in town. Well, it was close to 10:00 a.m. and the very first place I hit was Em- merson's where | was given a donation and an envelope. | asked "What's that for?' And Mr. Emmerson replied, "With something like this, you're going to need something to carry the money in." 1 thought nothing of it and went on (Thank you for the envelope again, Emmersons). After this I started up the street towards the high school getting great results, nobody said (2) 8x10°S (2) 5X7°S No additional charge for Wavailanid, may vb Poses our Thurs & Fri (10) Wallets 100 am Our Bonus Plush Toy is a high quality soft-stuffed animal made of the finest plush fiber - just the right size for your little one. I'd be stan- ding talking to the pro- prietor and people in the building would over-hear and when I went over to ask if they'd give, I'd get people throwing $20.00 bills to me, and I promis- ed everyone that I'd put a piece in the paper. Well, here it is. The response that I got was fantastic and everybody was more than happy to give. Some people said "I've given once but I'll give again because that tornado could easily have come here." I would say on the average 3 out of 30 people would not give at all. Now that's a good average. This town stood up on a spur of the mo- ment and said "YES, we'll give them some money."
