So, he takes the batteries back to the shop and when he has 40 or 50, sells them to a wrecker. He owns four trucks, two of them are on the road four days each week and the other two are back-up in case of breakdown. The crews don't work Wednesdays and Edgar takes that day to keep the trucks in top shape mechanically. It must pay off for him as he has one truck five years old that's been almost trouble free. He recently replaced the tires and has had to put in one clutch, which is amazing considering the stop and go kind of driv- ing involved. And he had to replace a part of the hydraulic mechanism (at a cost of $1,000) when a large piece of hardwood damaged the equipment. After more than two hours of work, my back was sore and my shoulders had a dull ache in them. I was starting to look forward to the end of the run. In fact, I could hardly wait. The average bag of garbage weighs about 20 pounds (by my rough calculation) so they are fairly easy to pick up in one hand. Ex- cept every once in a while, I'd grab a bag, lift, and it would stop me dead in my track. There's nothing heavier than a bag half-filled with old sod. You have to put both hands on it and give it areal heave to get it in the back of the truck. The longest single stop on our morning was at the Hospital. There was a large closet filled with garbage bags stacked up like cord-wood, along with dozens of empty boxes. Our stop there lasted about ten minutes and Edgar picks up the gar- bage there three times each week. But mostly we worked the residential areas of Port Perry and Prince Albert. I made one observa- tion about the kinds of families that live in Ap- ple Valley subdivision. There must be a lot of young kids and babies in those homes for at the foot of just about every driveway was at least one large empty Pamper box. Edgar says on hot days the smell can get pretty high, and I believe him. He also says on hot summer days, the heat from the truck can be oppressive, and | believe him on that count, too. Through the heat of summer, the icy cold of winter and on days when the rain never lets up, the Township garbage has to be picked up. It didn't take very long for me to come to the conclusion that Edgar takes much pride in do- ing a good job. Once when a bag partially broke open, he stopped to pick up small pieces of garbage. A broken bottle smashed on the pave- ment beside the truck was quickly shovelled up. Little things like this the public may not ap- preciate, or even be aware of, but if he left scraps of garbage at the foot of a driveway, or a few pieces of broken glass on the road, you can be sure there would be complaints. Township ad- ministrator Earl Cuddie says in five years, there have been very few com- plaints about garbage collection in this Township. In fact, at times, councillors have told Edgar that he's pick- ing up stuff that he's not supposed to according to the contract. He just smiles, shrugs, and says 'I just hate to leave anything beside the road." Edgar's proud of his safety record, too. Col- lecting garbage and working around hydraulic compactors can be dangerous, but in five years, he's been ac- cident free. Just two weeks ago, the Transpor- tation Safety Association of Ontario recognized this fact and presented him with a nice certificate. Collecting garbage 1s a bit of a family affair for Edgar His sons Ron and Dave work with him and Mrs. Brown handles the bookkeeping. On occa- sion, Ron's wife Barbara will work the trucks. and edgar says she can keep up with all of them The job 1s not without its small rewards. of course Edgar knows a lot of people along the routes and many of them stop to chat At Christmas time. he finds gifts of cigarettes and bottles of wine. and that helps to make it all worthwhile But after working with this guy for a morning. | came away with the distinct impression that Edgar 1s the type of per- son who just enjoys doing a job well
