LOB 1L0 PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 18, 1985 -- 35 Strawberry Social a big yummy Island annual Scugog Island News by Mrs. Earl Reader Another big Annual event is The Strawberry Supper at the Communi- ty Hall and sponsored by the ""Head' U.C.W. You may reserve your tickets any time now. Just call this correspondent or contact a U.C.W. member. Wed. July 10 is a little later than usual and we wondered about strawberries. But it does look as if our backward summer may look after that. On Sat. evening the Guides and Brownies had their annual banquet with their leaders and mothers at the Com- munity Hall served by the 'Grace' U.C.W. As a Women's Institute member, Mrs. Bonnie Gerrow spent a few says in London. We expect the Social Planning meeting plann- ed for June 24 will be cancelled until September. The Heayn Sale on Sat. was well attended when people were also able to purchase furnishings belonging to the late Ray Cook. On Sat. June 29 the In- stitute ladies will be around to collect your donations for the Auction Sale the following week. The same weekend on- ly Sunday and Monday, June 30 and July 1, this year it will be Pioneer Days at the Scugog Museum Complex where many specialties and events will take place and refreshments available on both days. Al the Island United there was a noticeable attendance drop as SS. was taking a rest. But the children who did at- tend were well taken care of by Duggan with his experiences and attendants. Our sympathy was ex- pressed to Mr. Jake Bisschop and family in the recent bereavement of his father. At the same time we were pleased to welcome his uncle and aunt from Holland and his mother from Oshawa. The Junior Choir of the Island United will enjoy a summer party at the home of Amanda and Nicholas Pelyk at Aldred"s Beach Thurs- day, June 20 immediate- ly after school. Next Sunday, will be Communion Service at the Island United and Manchester. Bible Study evenings will commence again in September. Father's special day was marked by a ser- mon, "Earning the Right to be Called Dad,' taken from a study of the Father in 'The Prodigal Son." Three charges against youth in accidents A teenager, protected under the Youthful Of- fenders Act, has been charged with careless driving, failing to remain at the scene, and dangerous driving following two accidents June 10th. Durham Regional Police say a 1976 Ford, driven by the youth, was headed southbound, crossing Highway 7A at Nestletan,.when it collid- ed with a cement pillar owned by Barbara Mar- tin. Even though damage to the pillar totalled ap- proximately $150, the car took off from the scene. While police were in- vestigating that incident, the car was involved in a second accident, east of Durham Road 57 on the 4th Concession. Police say the driver lost control and rolled on its roof into the ditch. A passenger in the car, also a youth, was slightly in- jured and driven to Com- munity Memorial Hospital by a citizen in the area. Whew! In giving the green light to a proposed addi- tion at the back of Bruton's Drug Store on the south side of Queen Street, council will ask the Store to cough up $5000 towards a special fund that will be used to up-grade municipally owned parking lots in the downtown area. Bruton's is seeking permission for an addi- tion of about 600 square feet, but the new part will mean that the store com- pletely covers the lot area. Township by-laws stipulate that commer- cial businesses should provide one parking space for each 300 square feet of store area. In putting the price tag of $2500 on a parking spot, council indicated this will be the policy if businesses are unable to comply with parking re- quirements when addi- tions are constructed to enlarge retail store space.
