But regardless of the name change, the store is still basically the same, run by the family that has made a name for itself after 14 years in the hardware business. business. That's when Allan Beacock purchased the store from Frank and Muriel Hoskin, a farm- ing couple much like the Beacocks. "Frank just came and "pestered me until I bought it," Mr. Beacock recalls with a grin. "I never thought of myself as a hardware man.' His son Bob began to take a lot of the store's responsibility over after 1975, when he graduated from Port Perry High School Always known as a friendly place where you could find just about everything, Beacock's Hardware became a fix- ture in the small com- munity, an anchor to the time of the old-fashioned genera] store where folks would drop around just to shoot the breeze. "People would come in if they wanted directions. Or anything for that mat- ter,' Mr. Beacock Senior says. 'They always came here." But tradition nearly came to a screeching halt on May 16, 1984, when the hardware store burned to the\ground. The family everything they had in- vested in the store and seriously wondered if they'd be able to re-build. All the old lines are there, along with a new range of housewares, plumbing and electrical supplies, home decorative ideas, and farm equipment.
