s high- light PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, July 3, 1985 - baseball action in Cartwright by Chris Cliff JUNIOR DIVISION (7-8 years) On Monday night, at the Blackstock Fair grounds a close game was played, ending in Breezy Acres Farms defeating the Blackstock Lioness 12-10. For Breezy Acres, Mike Leach and Scott Barr hit homers, with a triple by Brad Morton. Doubles were scored by Jonathan McCourt, Shawn LLewerentz, Brad Mor- ton, Doug Seabrook and Kevin Gilbank with 2. Singles were batted in by Lisa Gilbank, Scott Barr, Donnie Chff. Dawid Kemp, Kirk Swain and Doug Seabrook For the Lioness, home runs were hit by Travis Mitchell and Nyles Platten Brent Donelly managed a tri- ple, a double and caught a fly ball at second base. Over the holiday weekend they played 6 games, winning 4 and losing 2. Game results were as follows: Port 5, Toronto Royals 1; Toronto Coasters 3, Port 1; Port 5, Oshawa Copperfields 1; Port 4, Whitby Legion 3, Port 6, Sutton 4 and Oshawa Juniors 2, Port 1. The over-all team per- formance in hitting, pit- Tournament for Midgets The Port Perry Minor Softball Association will be hosting their 10th an- nual Midget Boys Soft- ball Tournament on July 12, 13 and 14 and should add some exciting soft- ball to the Festival Weekend schedule of events. Tournament chair- man, Wayne Venning and Vin Walker, have again lined up some of the strongest softball teams in Ontario for this «tournament. Bridlewood (Scarborough) will be back again to defend the championship they won last year, but should get strong competition from perennial favourites, Napanee, Agincourt and Bracebridge. Several teams will be making their first ap- pearance in our Tourna- ment as Acton, Port Elgin, Belleville and Markham will be here to compete in the 3 day tournament. North York and Peterborough are returning after several years of absence, while the local teams will be represented by Port Perry, Oshawa, Pon- typool and Bradford. This marked the 1st time that Port has been able to beat Green- bank in 3 years while los- ing to them 6 times. In the upcoming week Port Perry hosts Oshawa Curlys on Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m., then travels to Brooklin on Thursday night to play a make-up game previous- ly cancelled. For Lishman's, Jody 10gan was 4 for 4 at bat with a grand slam homer, a home run, a tri- double. Michael Staniland scored a triple, a double, a single and had two good catches in the field. Ken- dall Chorostecki hit two triples, two doubles and played well in the field. Jeff Kemp hit a triple, a double, a single and snagged two good cat- ches in the outfield. Doubles were also scored by Chris Beacock, Jen- nifer Arbuckle, Leanne McDowell and Darren Leach, with singles by Geordie Lishman and Bristol Sleep and a triple by Danny Hill. Pitching was shared by Christie Corden, Michelle Morton and Andy Wilson. SENIOR DIVISION (12-15 years) Blackstock Lions defeated Don Frew and Sons, with a score of 14-7. Home runs were hit in by Derek Chase and Brent MacMillan for Frews. Two double plays occur- red, the first by Mike Staniland and Derek Chase, and the second by Brent MacMillan and Dwayne Frew. Rob Smith of the Port Perry Army Cadet Corps are going to have an interesting sum- mer. Jeff left last week for six weeks at CFM ipperwash, where he'll take the cadet in- structor course, and Rob is on his way to the High Arctic, where he'll spend the next five weeks on Baffin Island learning about the Arctic. The Cadets receive all their expenses and a salary while on these training courses.
