Steele who will supervise the Scugog team, said last week he believes this will be the first time ever that a team from a volunteer force has been invited to compete. "There is a lot of prestige involved, and we are very pleased just to get the invitation,' he said. Last year's competi- tion was won by a team from the Mississauga Fire Department, and all other teams represented full time departments. Capt. Steele said that aside from himself and Dave Ballingall, the other members of the Scugog team have yet to be selected, but the team - members and back-ups will be chosen on ex- perience and ability with the equipment. While the up-coming competitions are taken seriously by all involved, there is a learning pro- cess as well, explained Capt. Steele. "By watching the other teams, we will pick up a few points on techn- ques,' he said. ¢ Last year, members of the Scugog department attended the competi- tions as observers, and Capt. Steele is confident the team this year will give a good showing. In recent years, use Qf extrication equipment at accident scenes by fire departments has greatly increased. Last year, for example, the local department responded to 14 emergency situations where the equipment was required. And _the number of situations is increasing every year, said Capt. Steele.
