Bradford Midget defeated Agincourt to win the Midget tournament on the weekend. Bradford pitcher first baseman Darrin Madeley (left) was named MVP. That's But Agincourt wasn't about to roll over and play dead. In the top of the 6th inning, Richard Lowery smashed a two run homer, and the team went on to pick up two more runs to make the score 8-5. When Bradford went down 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the inning, Agin- court had one last chance for a rally to tie the score. . A lead-off single was erased at second on a force play which left a runner at first with one out. Then Bradford first- sacker Darrin Madeley snared a sharp line drive and touched the bag for a double play that ended the game. Madeley was named the tournament MVP for his work on the mound and with the bat. He started the final game, pitched nearly five inn- ings before running out of Sted in the wicked heat at Joe Fowler Park. Greg Helum finished the game in relief. He also got his team on the board first, breaking a scoreless tie in the bot- tom of the fourth with a line shot home run over the centre field fence. Both Bradford and Agincourt were un- defeated going into the championship game Sun- day afternoon played in front of a large crowd. Agincourt whipped Bridlewood 6-1 in the semi finals, and Brad- ford had a tough 10-8 win over Napanee in the other semi final match. The Port Perry Bradford captain Martin Harding. (See story for details) Midgets opened the tour- nament with an 8-2 win over Pontypool, then fell victim to Napanee and took a 3-0 loss. The Port Perry team could have forced a playoff for one of the semi final positions with a victory over Markham, but came up one run short in a 9-8 loss that bounced them from contention. Bradford picked up $200 in travelling money for the first place finish, and Agincourt took home $100 for finighing second. Darrin Medeley was named MVP for the tour- nament, while Agin- court's Ed Hare took honours as the Most Valuable Pitcher. The Vin Walker Trophy for Bradford Midgets win Culinar tournament sportsmanship went to Bridlewood coach Bruce Miller. Tournament organizers were more than pleased with the way things went this year. Rain on Sunday morning caused only a minor delay in the play, and the final game was over by 5:00 P.M. that afternoon. Korbak sparkles in Greenbank sweep Greenbank Gamblers veteran pitching ace, Russ Korbak, pitched a pair of masterful games on the weekend and eliminated Ayr from the O.R.S.A. race. On Saturday night in Greenbank, the Gamblers dropped Ayr by a 64 score and then on Sunday in Ayr they won again by a score of 6-1. Russ Korbak was ex- cellent on the Gambler mound in both games. At Ayr on Sunday night before a large crowd, he had a no hitter going with one out in the ninth inn- ing but Ayr finally bun- ched a walk and two hits together for their only run. Meanwhile the Green- bank bats were hot in both games with Neil Rodd, Don Beaton and Brian Till picking up 3 hits apiece on Saturday night in Greenbank Park. Dennis Romeril added a pair with Hugh Johnston, Greg Rodd, John Foster and Russ Korbak having one hit each On Sunday might in Ayr Don Beaton and Greg Rodd led the attack with a pair of safe hits each with Neil Rodd, John Foster and Russ Korbak hitting safely once Both Don Beaton and John Foster hit home runs in Ayr and Greg Rodd was nipped at home plate on his bid for a homer Don Beaton had a great series at the plate for the Gamblers with five safe hits. a base on balls. and the Ayr left fielder robbed him of a sure home run with an excellent catch of his long line drive in the 8th inning The Gamblers next op- ponent in the Ontario Rural Softball Associa- tion play downs will be either Jarvis or Ward- sville but that series is not yet finished. L.ast Monday night in Greenbank Park, the Gamblers met the league leading Goodwood Auto Wreckers in a head on battle for first place. Ken Goreski started on the mound for Green- bank with Darryl Norton pitching for Goodwood. This well pitched game ended with the Gamblers taking a well deserved 7-2 win behind Ken Goreski's 5 hit pitching. Brian Till and Dennis Romeril led the Gamblers nine hit of- fense off Norton with 2 hits each, including a tri- ple each. Trevor Till hit a towering two run homer in the fourth inn- ing to give the Green- bank team a 6-1 lead. Other Gambler hits went to Neil Rodd, Hugh Johnston, Don Beaton and Greg Rodd. Darryl Norton hit two home runs for Goodwood to account for both their runs. The Gamblers are still undefeated in league play but they still have to pick up 3 postponed games in the next few weeks. Ladies golf news Pine Ridge Ladies were hosts to the Sum- merlea Ladies for a 9-hole game of golf and luncheon on Tuesday. Tied for low gross were Vivian Rider of Pine Ridge and Josy Wilson of Summerlea, each with a 47 Pine Ridge low net winners were Terry Cris- clone with a 26 and Gail Farrington with 28 Sum merlea low net winners were Mary Robinet with 37 and Ann Mane Ken nedy with 38. Longest drive was made by Carol Wilson of Summerlea. Closest to the pin on No.16 was Marjorie Jackson of Pine Ridge. The least putts were 14 made by Pine Ridge golfers Marie Charles and Pat Fisher.
