\} i a i er I MA RE " Lake Regatta set for this weekend The swim races may have been cancelled due to high bacteria counts at the Caesarea govern- ment dock, but everything else at the 53rd annual Lake Scugog Regatta and Field day is going ahead on schedule. The Durham Region Health Unit posted signs declaring the beach un- safe a week or so ago and as a result, regatta organizers were forced to cancel all of Sunday's SWim races. "We wouldn't want to endanger the lives of any of the children at all," said Honourary Presi- dent Len Prout. But since prizes are already lined up for the races, Mr. Prout says a series of novelty races will be set up in Putsey Park instead. They'll start at 1:30 Sunday and will be open to children of all ages. The greasy pole con- test will still go ahead at the beach at 1:30 as will all the other events scheduled in what should be the best regatta yet. The whole thing kicks "off Saturday at 9:15 with the Caesarea Annual Golf Tournament at Pine Ridge Golf Club in Port Perry. It's a shot gun start, so be there on time and be prepared to col- lect a few of the many prizes. At 10 a.m. the Gala Fun Parade will get go- ing with prizes in all age groups for fancy and original costumes, decorated carriages, wagons and bicycles for all boys and girls 11 years and younger. The parade starts at 10 a.m. from the fire hall and winds its way down to Putsey Park. Parade marshalls include Tom Sherwin Senior, Carter Roberts, Arthur Coplin, and Bruce Lawrie. The fun continues with the Miss Regatta Beauty Contest for girls between the ages of 14 and 20. You can register for the event at 10 a.m. at Putsey Park and keep it in mind that shorts and tops are preferred over bathing Scugog Island (R suits. Last year's winner, Dawn Legere, will be there to crown the new Miss Regatta. At 1:30 the field day events kick off at Putsey Park with the Doug Pyzer Marathon, for kids 16-and under (two laps) and those 17 and over (one lap). Then there's the Girls four and under running race, boys four and under, girls six and under, boys six and under, girls eight and under, boys eight and under, girls ten and under, boys ten and under, Bridge the Generation Gap Parent and Child 14 and under, girls 12 and under, boys 12 and under, girls 14 and under, boys 14 and under, girls 16 and under, boys 16 and under, Mar- ried Ladies Time Event, girls 12 and under novel- ty race, boys 12 and under novelty race, mix- ed relay 16 and under, married couples novelty event, married men's nail driving contest, married ladies nail driv- ing contest, ladies open 70 yard dash 15 and over, 25 and over dash (female), men's open 100 yard dash 15 and over, 25 and over dash (male), novelty couples 18 and over, mixed relay 16 and over, boys and girls three legged race 14 and over, and the tug of war--get your teams together! Prizes will be awarded after each event. Saturday evening will feature a ball game for married men versus single men starting at 6 p.m. See Wayne Bradt tor details. And on Sunday morn- ing men can show their prowess in the Men's Singles Horseshoe Tour- nament at 10:30. Wind- surfing will take place next, at 11 am. Don't forget to register for the sail boat races at 2:30 p.m. at the Newbold Beacon Marina. There's the Lake Scugog Annual Sail Boat Championship Race for the Ringham Trophy and the Hobie 16 race for the Gary Turner Trophy, following the open. On Sunday evening there's a mixed volleyball match, round robin, with registration from 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and the men's doubles horseshoe tournament registration at 6:30 p.m. Monday, of course, is canoe day with racing starting at 10:30 a.m. It all starts 200 yards south of the marina and don't forget, racing paddles aren't allowed. There's the women's single canoe race, men's single, girls 15 and under (four to a team), paddle 50, men's double canoe race, men's war canoe, boys 15 and under, men's 16 and over, women's 16 and over, mixed doubles, crab race, and the Le Mans Start (three to a team, open). So there's lots to do and plenty to see, this weekend at the 53rd an- nual Lake Scugog Regatta.
