- "rr ss tt ttt PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. August 13, 1985 -- 11 There's good help for food addict Say 'addiction' and most people think of drugs, alcohol or gambling. But for the people who go to Overeaters Anonymous, food is the addiction that conjures up an inner struggle similar to that endured by an alcoholic or a junkie. Compulsive eaters can't just stop at a glass of milk and a cookie at bedtime. One cookie turns into an entire bag plus a couple of sand- wiches and whatever else happens to be in the fridge. And they eat at any time of the day or night. A bad dream might wake them up and the only way sleep will return is Every Thursday might at eight, a small group of people with one thing in common ---- com- pulsive eating ---- meets at the Railroadhouse Motor Motel in Port Perry to gain strength from each other and the self-discipline taught by Overeaters Anonymous. Doris, a middle-aged Scugog resident, read an article about the group in an Oshawa newspaper and decided she would attend a meeting and see what all the fuss was about. "We went down because of the article and liked it and because there was enough of us interested, we got one of our own going," she said. The group, still in its infancy, usually ranged in s1ze from eight to 15, but Doris says the group can grow as big as it needs to. There are no weigh- ins, no diets and no membership dues. A hat is passed around during the meetings to help pay for rent and paper supplies. Although the group deals with eating pro- blems, not all of its members are obese, or even overweight. Some people can get by on three meals a day while others need four. The same applies to junk food. Some people gain weight from it, others' weights are not affected as much. The real aim of the club is to help people with eating problems, not just overeaters. Anorexics, those who feel a need to starve - OPENING SOON CONWAY PLACE by Marilyn & Doug Hillier themselves to lose weight, can also be members. At the regular weekly meetings readings are passed out, discussions are held on different ways of helping people, speakers are often in- vited and other overeaters who have suc- cessfully taken control of their eating habits tell how they did it. The resemblance to Alcoholics Anonymous is not a coincidence Much of the literature read and passed out at meetings 1s borrowed from AA, ass one of the textbooks, Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous. Also, like AA, the group is completely anonymous. Club rules forbid Doris from releas- ing her name to anyone from the media and the same goes for pictures of group members. There are 120,000 members in 6,500 groups spread across 39 coun tries. It's a growing organization but still has the hearts (and stomachs) of overeaters in mind. "You sort of abstain from overeating as you would from alchohol, ex- cept you can't stop eating entirely," Doris explain- ed You're supposed to eat to live, not live to eat." with the help of a trip to the kitchen cupboard. While some people would scoff at the com- parison, for compulsive overeaters, food addic- tion is every bit as serious as alcoholism. Overeating leads to a myriad of physical and mental health problems including obesity, high blood pressure, weak hearts, varicose veins, poor self-esteem, lack of confidence and downright depression. Feeling that food has control over one's life promotes "what's the use" and 'I'm not worth anything" attitudes. Fat people as jolly people is a dangerous myth that hides deep-rooted insecurities.
