PRC Sh Sag 24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues. August 13, 1985 Local Atoms close at Port Perry event (From page 20) booted a booming shot from outside the penalty area past the diving Whitby goalie. Five minutes later Port Perry were caught upfield and a breakaway by Whitby saw, John Sinden put the ball over the leaping Mark Coseway's hands to make the score Port Perry 2, Whitby 1. The game ended seconds after Jennifer Hunter took a penalty shot for Port Perry but again Eric Morra's div- ing save kept the final score at Port Perry 2, Whitby 1. Port Perry vs. Markham The whistle to start the game hadn't gone but the war had begun. Markham had a thirty second chant from the huddle that seemed to unsettle the Port Perry players for the first few minutes. The play was all around the Port Perry penalty area and only some great defensive play by Karen Kett - who won't be nine till later this month - Lindsay Parry and David Pashley kept Markham off the scoreboard. Things settled down to a see-saw battle with the offensive edge going to Markahm but the score remaining 0-0 at the half. Five minutes into the second half Todd Smart drove a hard shot from outside the box past the diving goalie to put Port Perry into the lead 1-0. Markham were stung and showed it by really turning on the pressure. Steve Desautel with Dave Bourgeois and Michael Pashley another player who is still only eight - on the half back line kept the Markham shooters at bay with some good team work on defense. When the final whistle went the score of Port Perry 1, Markham 0 bore out the fact the teams were very evenly matched. Port Perry vs. Bowmanville The wind had strenghtened con- siderably by the start of the third game but Port Perry went straight on the offence against the wind and within five minutes Steve Desautel took a beautiful cross from Duane Empr- ingham and angled a lovely shot into the cor- ner past the outstretched goalie. This gave Port Perry a one goal lead and they kept the pressure on with Jeremy Williams, right wing and Mike Tripp left wing constantly feeding the ball into the centre. Only some good defen- sive scrambling by the Bowmanville defence kept the score down to 1-0 Minor softball (From page 23) and a single by Brandi Boardman. Michael Staniland played an outstanding game at first base mak- ing several unassisted outs, excellent catches and aggressive playing at the position in leading his team in a losing cause Chris Beacock made spectacular tag at home plate to save a sure win, caught several pops for outs and contributed 3 hits, one a triple. It wasn't until the twenty minute mark however, that Mike Tripp sent a boom- ing left foot shot into the top right corner of the net to get the insurance goal Port Perry so desperate- ly wanted. That opened up the game for Port Perry and they began to play with a lot more con- fidence. Five minutes later Sean McEnaney took a pass from Todd Smart and made the score 3-0. One minute later Mike Tripp made it 4-0 with his second of the game and one minute after that Sean McEnaney seemed to say "anything you can do, I can do" and notch- Jeff Andrews booted a thirty yard bullet bet- ween the uprights to make the score Coll- ingwood 2, Port Perry 1. ed his second goal of the game past the harrassed Bowmanville goalie. The final score Port Perry 5, Bowmanville 0. Semi-Final Port Perry continued Port Perry to press and at the fifteen vs. Collingw minute mark only a With the wind at their backs Collingwood at- tacked right from the opening whistle and were rewarded for their ef- forts when Dale Lamon- din put Collingwood one up after five minutes. The wind still played havoc with Port Perry's efforts to clear the ball out of their half and Col- lingwood went two goals up at the fifteen minute mark when Richard Rabnet blasted a shot super save by the Coll- ingwood goalie, Owen Civera, from a Jeff An- drews penalty shot stop- ped the score being tied. With four minutes left to play Michael Williams took a shot during an ex- citing scramble in the Collingwood goal area and the score was 2-2. The game was into in- jury time when hand ball gave Jeff Andrews a se- cond chance from the penalty spot. This time past a diving Mark he gave the Collingwood Coseway. goalie no chance and put After only two minutes Port Perry into the lead. of play of the second half One minute later, the final whistle went and Port Perry had won a real nail-bitter 3 goals to 2 and were through to the final. Final Port Perry vs. Burlington B.J. Andrews has done a super coaching job to get the Atom team into the final and was generous in her praise of the assistance she had received in all the games from Brian Mark on the opposite sideline. The first half started with Port Perry again facing a fairly stiff breeze and ten minutes into the game, Michael Blaney of Burlington, put them one goal up. Ten minutes later Casey Vanderlinden put Burl- 'ington two up and Port Perry began to feel they were in a replay of the semi-final. Two minutes before half time, Mark Commisso gave Burl- ington a three to nothing lead which stayed at that when the half time whis- tle blew. Port Perry pressed the attack with the wind at their backs during the se- cond half but the Burl- ington defence hung tough. Despite great ef- forts from Michael Williams, Jeremy Williams, Jeff Andrews and all the team they couldn't buy a goal! They forced the Burl- ington goalie to make save after save but at the final whistle the score was Burlington 3, Port Perry 0. Better luck next year Port Perry Atoms.
