6 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Sept. 10, 1985 remember Sharyn reaches CNE semi-final | when? (From page 5) The Carnival and entertainment sponsored jointly by the Lions Club and the Fair Board was held on Saturday. The highlight of the evening was the entertainment provided by Miss Jean Bright and her tap dancing pupils, Darlene Stewart, John Meek, Sandford, and Carol Hope, Port Perry. The lucky draw was won by Mrs. Marvin Appleton 20 YEARS AGO Thursday, September 9, 1965 Mrs. Louise Elsner, Mrs. Douglas Mackey, Mrs. Wentworth Watson and Mrs. Jack Gray, all members of the Community Memorial Hospital, were presented with 10-year service pins at a ceremony at the summer home of Mrs. E. Hook. hospital superintendent. The homes of Mrs Ron Peel, Mr. Charles Bourgeois, Dr. R. McNab and Mr. Merle Dowson were broken into during the weekend. Not too much was gained by the law breakers. Over 8,000 enjoyed the 1965 Fair during a sun- ny and warm Labour Day, September 6. Port Perry and Reach School's enrolment were all time high. Port Perry 527, and Reach 691 pupils editorial comments (From page 4) The federal treasury has already pumped a couple of hundred million into that bank in an ef- fort to keep it floating, but to no avail. The final tab may soar to $1 billion. And last week, former finance minister in the Liberal government Don Macdonald unveiled his three year economic study. We learned the price tag for that study was a nifty $20.6 million. How many federal economic studies have there been In the last few years? Who's counting? Anyway, for $20 million, Big Mac tells us that free trade with the U.S. is the only way to go, but the federal government would have to set a $4 billion fund to smooth the disaster for those in- dustries and workers who are eaten up in the process. He also told us that the UIC scheme needs tightening up (he really broke new ground on that one) spousal and child tax credits should be ax- ed, along with the baby bonus. If the government really wants to crucify the hard working middle classes in this country, do away with the tax credits and the baby bonus. Yes, it was quite a week in Canada: a bank- ing fiasco; a $20.6 million study and a recommen- dation to further the financial strain on middle in- come Canadian families. Is it any wonder the guy on the street is left shaking his head and still wondering just what the heck 1s going on in the nation's capital?
