18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Sept. 24,1985 Local girl fo serve as ambassador by Natalie Franssen I was very fortunate to be one of the 170 par- ticipants chosen from 800 applicants across Canada to visit for one week, one of Canada's ten beautiful national parks. Essays, letters and references were some of the things I sub- mitted in order to qualify for my trip to Cape Breton Island. During the week of Sept. 8 to 15 our ex- change was packed with many activities. We went on many day hikes, toured the Alexander Graham Bell Museum, went on a whale Cruise (which unfortunately we didn't see any whales), saw the Fortress of Louisbourg, and went on an over-night hike When at the Fortess of Louisbourg four people were interviewed. Two were on CBC Television and two were on a local radio station. Also on this trip we learned about trees, rocks, animals and gathered general knowledge about Na- tional Parks in Canada. Through this trip I earned the title "Na- tional Youth Heritage Ambassador " As an am- bassador, I am en- couraged to lecture and show slides to groups which request them. If you wish to learn more about Canada's National Parks - phone (416) 985-7015. NATALIE FRANSSEN BIG NEWS IN VIDE THE LATEST FROM HITACHI: VT63 A NEW STYLE WITH DETACHABLE WIRELESS REMOTE! Consequently, you may still be able to get a ticket by calling 985-7732. Like all of us, you may be wondering what became of those 75 balloons that were sent off with their names and messages and floated off toward the southeast. Since they had a life span of perhaps 18 hrs. they had to come down somewhere. So far we've heard no results and we think of the possibilities of their end. When you stop to think about it, it could be com- pared to the lives of humans of all colours and races. Some rise higher than others. All have an equal opportuni- ty of bringing a message to the world. A disaster may strike some, others become lost and useless while others may arrive in unforeseen places yet are never noticed or make any impression. We hope you are still saving your papers for the paper drive in October. Reta Reader had a pleasant 2 days last week in a reunion with 4 room- mates of school days when they met in Toron- to, Orangeville and Shelburne and caught up on the events of their lives. Raymond and Jane Reader recently return- ed from a restful 3 week vacation when they left the rest of the world with its sad stories and disasters as there 1s no radioor T.V. in St. Kitts and Nevis, but plenty of beaches and sports. These are small twin islands of the Caribbean. You may learn about Batik clothing and art- work, processing of sugar, the saman tree of 350 years, history, beau- ty in rain forests, flowers and scenery, along with local hand crafts and brilliantly coloured stamps, and many unusual estates. Last Thursday Jr. Choir started at the Island United with about 25 children attending. Our sympathy is ex- tended to the family of Bill Mark of Port Perry. A very well known resi- dent of the area as he owned the Port Perry dairy for years and recently lived behind the Post Office. Although in ailing health for a few years, he will always be remembered for his friendliness, his courageous smile and cheerful remarks, as well as consideration for others. On Sunday we were pleased to see former Island residents, Mrs. Reta Rodman and Mrs. Mabel Strong with hus- band Hugh calling on Island friends. Congratulations to Manchester Church An- niversary in having such arewarding anniversary service as well as monetary returns. Next Sunday Sept. 29 the Island United will host a joint Service with Manchester at the usual time. There will be a guest speaker, Rev. Vic Wood from Toronto. The Coffee Hour at the Island United has been changed to Oct. 8, 10-11:30 a.m. when: (Mildred) Millie Nokes of the Manilla-Lindsay area but a well known former resident of the Scugog area will come to share her faith story. The '*Head'UCW will meet Wed. evening Oct. 2 at the home of Mrs. Bonnie Gerrow with Myrtle Gimblett's group in charge. Again, there is a treat of special music at the Port Perry Baptist Church on the Island for Mon. Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. when a 42 voice male choir from North West England and Wales will present a concert of sacred music. There will be a free will offering to help with expenses. - JAZZ - FROM THE 30's - 40's - 50's Sat., Oct. 5th from 9:00 P.M. to 1:00 AM.
