24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, Sept. 24, 1985 Port Bantams end the season Port Perry Lions Club Bantams Softball team wrapped up a very suc- cessful season by winn- ing the York-Durham Bantam Softball League Play-off Tournament held on the weekend in Markham. The local club had completed the schedule with 17 wins and 3 losses, and swept the two day tournament with three straight wins. Port Perry opened the five team tournament by defeating Sharon 3-2 as they scored a run in the bottom of the seventh in- ning to win it. The Port Perry 'cam opened the scoring in the fourth inn- ing when Bobby Orr, Craig Venning and Keith Roberge all had hits to take an early 2-0 lead, this stood until the top of the seventh inning when Sharon came back to tie the game with three straight hits. The winning run was scored by Jamie Mahoney when he bunted softly and went to second on a bad throw, he then stole third base and scored on a pass ball by the Sharon catcher to give Port Perry the win. This second game win over Bradford put Port Perry in the Champion- ship game on Sunday morning against Sharon who earlier had defeated Stouffville and Bradford to gain the final round. The fans who came to see the game were not disap- pointed as Port Perry's Dave Burnett and Sharon's Dave Bar- anieski "hooked-up' in a real pitchers battle as they had all season long, but Port Perry's fine defensive play pulled them through to a 2-1 victory. Port Perry scored a run in the first inning on a fielders choice out by Jeff Oke. Sharon tied it up in the second inning when they had two of their three hits allowed by Burnett to score their only run. Sharon did come close in the third inning, when they loaded bases with nobody out, but 2 excellent defensive plays by third baseman Bobby Orr kept them off the scoreboard. Port Perry again took the lead in the fourth in- ning as Craig Venning opened with a line drive single to centre field, and eventually scored on Blair Bailey's ground-out to short stop.
