Letter to the Editor (From page 6) from a public high school and while there 1 also realized all I had missed in the public system. It is sufficient to say that there were good aspects to both systems and ultimately I was better served by the public system, it would also be safe to say that there were probably other students who would have been better served by the separate system. However, the systems should come together in a complimenting way to the benefit of all students. Going back to the issue of the perhaps deal bet- ween Cardinal Carter and Premier Davis, like Mr. Davis, Cardinal Carter has no doubt wrestled with this issue himself for many years. He must realize the ad- vantages and the not so obvious disadvantages of seeking full funding. I hope he realizes that with the money also comes a prize or compromise. Religion is not only taught as a subject at these separate schools but is also to prevade the entire school philosophy, now that sounds like a keekstra type of ap- proach and there is the very point where 1 per- sonally believe we can all gain in having one system. Any system which preaches instead of teaching is not instruc- ting our children to live in a tolerant society. Car- dinal Carter 1 am sure, realized, as did Mr. Davis that the short term transition would be dif- ficult but the long term gain would benefit everyone. As we would understand we will ac- cept each other no mat- ter our handicap, culture, sex or religion. We will become one united system with tolerances for others no matter what private schools continue with their special traditions and/or beliefs be it Up- per Canada College or St. Michael's School. There is a place for everyone in Ontario and I hope we are bigger people than those who say we cannot grow beyond the colors of the Orange and Green. Yours truly. John R. O'Toole. R R 3.
