FOCUS - JULY 2007 Museum hires local resident as curator Shannon steps down on maternity leave Shannon Kelly, the smiling director of Scugog Shores Museum has a particularly radiant glow these days. She and her husband Daniel are expecting their first child in late July and Shannon is now looking forward to a year’s maternity leave. “I haven’t had a year off since High School,” she commented. Shannon’s last official event was the Museum’s Car Show on June 16, but she’s hoping to return for the Museum’s annual Dog Days of Scugog later this month. “I will be here if] am able,” she says. The Museum will continue to flourish during her absence under the direction of Aurora Hall who has taken on the curator’s respon- sibilities during Shannon’s leave. Aurora is no stranger to the Scugog area. She was born and educated here before taking the Museum Conservation program at Sir Sanford Fleming College in Peterborough. While a student at Fleming she worked at Scugog Shores Museum as a summer student in 1997 and 1998. “I had many happy experiences here at the Scugog Shores Museum and I am really looking forward to returning,” she said. For the past two and a half years Aurora has been working at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. “My responsibility was the Triple A display; Asia, the Americas and Asia Pacific,” she stated. e ROM there is such a huge staff that the tasks are some- what narrow in scope as everyone has a specific task. Here in a small museum you have an opportunity to multi task, which can be much more interesting. She continued, saying “I’m looking forward to looking for op- portunities to put my exhibit experience to work here, but most of alllam eager to enjoy my contacts with the people I know here in Scugog.” The two women are not strangers, having met on numerous oc- casions. Shannon noted that Aurora has assisted with a variety of local activities including the Heritage Committee, Doors Open and just recently with the Canoe the Nonquon, the Museum’s annual fund raiser. Aurora says she’s looking forward to the change of pace and particularly not having to commute. “My commute time to the ROM was about an hour and 45 minutes one way!” She’s now a mere stones-throw from work, living in Prince Albert with her hus- band Chris, who is a news reporter for The Port Perry Star.
