CLAREMONT 649-2112 Residents fear for their wells A group of Scugog Point residen- ts has voiced strong opposition to a proposed 18 lot subdivision in their area, unless there can be guaran- tees that the development won't have adverse effects on their wells Spokesman Ronald Dick, speaking for about 30 residents who attended Monday's meeting of Township council said there is a real concern that new wells will cause existing ones to go dry, and that septic systems may also affect the existing shallow wells The proposed 18 lot subdivision is being developed by lawyer Gary Shewan, and he told council that a hydrologists report prepared recently indicates that if the new wells are drilled to deep depths "there would be no significant im- pact on existing wells." Mr Shewan went on to say that the subdivision received council approval in 1979, and all the roads, culverts, drainage and storm drains have been approved by the Township engineers. He added that the Durham Health Umt has given approval to the size of the lots and the location of septic systems on each lot He said the lots would likely sell in the $35,000 price range and homes built on them would be in the $75 to $100,000 range In response to requests from the concerned residents of the area, Mayor Jerry Taylor said the coun- cil cannot give written guarantees that wells won't be affected, but all possible steps will be taken to en- sure that doesn't happen. He said development guidelines in Scugog are very stringent to protect existing property owners and all development must get the stamp of approval from the Town- ship's consulting engineers. Although the proposed project received approval in principle several years ago, the land must be re-zoned from the existing rural designation to shoreline residen tial Council will hkely decide on the re-zoning in the next several weeks Scugog Point 1s located on Lake Scugog. east of Caesarea and Williams ['oint. Marina (From page 1) over a ten year period. At the end of ten years, Mr. Mackey will have the option of re-negotiating a new lease for another ten years. The new building will have public washrooms, something the Township has been trying to put on the waterfront for several years. The bid by Lake Scugog Lumber for construction of the building was one of four received by the Town- ship. Council agrees, guard is needed in Prince Albert Scugog council has agreed with many parents in the Prince Albert area that an adult crossing guard is needed in front of the school in that community. Councillors voted in favour of hiring a guard for Pince Albert School at the meeting Monday af- ternoon. Reacting to a letter from Mrs. Linda March of Simcoe Street South who urged that the guard be hired, several councillors said the situation there is dangerous and could result in a tragedy. '"There is no question in my mind Park is approved Scugog Township council has ac- cepted a proposal from the Port Perry Kinsmen Club to finance and build a park in the Perry Glen Estates subdivision Dave Robinson, president of Port Perry Kinsmen, says in a let- ter to council that the club would provide all the manpower to put up playground equipment and con- struct a baseball diamond suitable for T ball and Mite age groups (five to eight years) He adds that if work can start on the new "Kinsmen Park' this fall. the facihties will be ready for spring Under the terms of the agreement between the Township and the Kinsmen Club, Scugog will buy about $5000 worth of equip- ment, with the full amount re paid by the Kinsmen Club over a three year period at $1700 per year The proposal from the Kinsmen Club was accepted unanimously by Township council Monday after: noon JIM'S MASONRY & CHIMNEY SWEEP Free Estimates 985-2790 the area (in front of the school) is very congested. Maybe it is time for a crossing guard," said Mayor Jerry Taylor. Area councillor John Wolters agreed with the Mayor, stating that motorists un-familiar with the crossing could approach too quickly and not be able to stop in time for a child. 'At present, kids crossing from the school to the east side of Sim- coe St. are escorted by a student safety patroller. Parents in Prince Albert have asked council on at least two previous occasions for a guard at the school. In her letter to council this week, Mrs. March points out that the problem of parked cars on Simcoe Street "identified by coun- cil to correct the situation, has been implemented, and has not remedied the problem." She went on to say that a delegation of concerned parents were planning to attend the council meeting October 28 to again ask for a crossing guard. All school crossing guards in the Township are hired by the municipality. ProLine Jonsered Wisi Bassett's Small Engines We have Jonsered ProLine SAWS Come in & see them for yourself!
