------ - ---- Lake Scugog one of cleanest lakes The latest report from Eu. .con- ment Ontario shows that Lake Scugog fish continue to be the niost contaminant-free in all the province. Allan Johnson, a biologist in charge of sport fish testing, said there are no limits on the consump- tion of perch, pickerel or smallmouth bass. "It's a great lake," said Johnson. "We've been testing it since 1978 and the fish always get a clean bill of health." However, the same can not be said for the levels of PCBs and Mirex in the rainbow trout caught in L.ake Ontario near Oshawa. Fish from 22 to more than 30 in- ches in length have high concentra- tions of the two contaminants. Johnson said the PCB levels in the lake are dropping but Mirex, pro- duced by Hooker Chemical, of Niagara Falls, N.Y, is still high. Environment Ontario says the trout should not be eaten by women of childbearing age and children under 15 years of age. For detailed reports on various lakes and con- sumption limitations on certain fish, call Environment Ontario at 965-6954. Sophia King runs for Separate School Bd. Sophia King, a Whitby area resi- dent for the past 20 years, wife and mother of three children is in the running for Separate School Trustee. Mrs. King defines a school system as a highly complex structure engaged in a myriad of functions and administrated by numerous professionals for the sole purpose of educating our children. A school Scott enters (From page 2) Scugog Island. "This is not a knock on the police officers or ambulance drivers, but the people who direct them to the scene should be more familiar with the area," he said. Mr. Scott is originally from the Leamington area where his family operates an apple and peach farm. He attended the University of Guelph and the University of Western Ontario. This is his first attempt at elected office. He is secretary for the board of directors at Port Perry Curling Club and a member of the executive of the Ontario Curling Association. Mr. Scott and his wife Margaret have a 13 year old daughter He said that if elected, there would be no conflict with his teaching duties next year and work on the council. But he would like to see the afternoon council meetings start at 3:30, rather than 1:30, and continue into the evening. As of last Friday, there were three candidates seeking office for Ward 3: incumbent Don Cochrane, and challengers Brad Heintzman and Randy Scott. system should be effective, proper- ly governed and productive. Therefore, voters should place as much emphasis on selecting a trustee as they do for council or mayoral candidates. The issues are numerous and im- portant. Virtually anything that af- fects children or parental concerns within the educational system is an issue. Separate School funding, although not a platform issue in this election, is a very real concern. Submissions are still being made to the govern- ment's standing committee in order to arrive at and provide the best legilation possible via Bill 30. This bill still has the potential of being referred to the Supreme Court for exaraination of it's constitutional validity. School boards all across the province must be prepared to confront this new legislation, it's challenges and it's consequences. Extended lunch hours and the ex- tended school day have also raised concerns from both parents and teachers. The board claims that the situation is currently being monitored however, given a man- date I would see to it that all these concerns are properly recognized, researched and resolved. The lines of communication between the Separate School supporters and the board must remain open and pro- ductive in order for it to be an effec- tive governing body. The board will be facing some of its most challenging years ahead. The rapid growth of Whitby, the Separate School Funding issue, computer technology and increased enrolments to mention just a few of the challenges the board will have to encounter. As a trustee she would help meet the challenges with wisdom, integrity and pride.
