20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 19, 1985 Sports Eagles sharp in tournament victory by Hillis Wilbur On Saturday, November 16th Port Perry Minor Hockey held their an- nual Midget Tournament sponsored by Coalition Acres owned by Doug and Muriel Coates The Grant Men: zies' Eagles played 3 excellent games of hockey and won the championship In the first game they played Huntsville who were all-Ontario dou- ble B champs for the last 2 years. This was the best game of the tour- nament with good end to end action, with the Eagles finally winning in overtime 3 to 2. Scoring for Port was Rob Baker assisted by Lee Wilbur Greg Warriner assisted by Dave Burnett; and getting the winner in Atoms give up just two goals in tournament On Saturday and Sunday the Mal- mont Farm Atoms entered their first tournament of the season in En- nismore and came away with three solid victories to earn the championship. In game one the Green Machine played the host team from En- nismore and skated to a solid 4-1 vic- tory. Jason Cochrane opened the scoring in the first period with a nice unassisted goal At 6:44 of the se- cond period Jeff Parry added the se- cond goal with the assist going to Jason McBride. In the third period Sean McEnaney tucked in the third goal with assists going to Lindsay Parry and Mike Sluggett. At the 7:08 mark Chad Garvock scored the final goal with the assist going to Steve Desautel and Brad Moase In game No 2 the Green Machine skated strongly against a club from East Gwillimbury and came away with a super shut out victory with a socre of 6-0 Steve Laird opened the scoring in the first period with the assist going to Jason Cochrane With 1 57 showing on the clock, Jason Cochrane scored with the assist go- ing to Steve Laird. In the second period Jason Cochrane netted the only goal of the period with a super effort assist going to Steve Laird In the third period the Green Machine really got rolling and scored three unanswered goals at the 8 11 mark Jason McBride scored with the assist going to Jeff Parry at the 8 minute mark Jeff Parry netted his first of the game with the assist going to Jason McBride and Jason Cochrane. The final goal was scored by Sean McEnaney on a nice pass from Jody Logan. Championship Game The Malmont Farm Atoms faced a strong club from Peterborough but with lots of desire they put together a well earned 3-1 victory which clinched the Ennismore championship trophy. The first period saw all the scor- ing as at the 6:34 mark Jason McBride netted the opening goal on a back hand shot assisted by Jody Logan. At the 5:01 mark Duane Em- pringham netted his first of the season (keep on shooting Duane) with the assist going to Jody Logan. The final goal of the game was scored by Jason Cochrane with the assist going to Chad Garvock. The tournament organizers gave out MVP awards during each of the games played Earning the MVP award for the Malmont Farm Atoms were Game | Jason (Cochrane, Game 2 Andrew Pereman, Game 3 - Jody Logan Special Note To Andrew Pereman and Shawn Larocque who shared the goaltending duties. con- gratulations on a job well done bet ween the pipes Dave Culbert of the Port Perry Eagles swoops in on the Lindsay goal in the final game of the Midget tournament held Saturday in Port Perry. The local team put on a pretty good overtime was Derek Dexter set up by Chris Cookman on a fine offen- sive rush. John Moore played great in goal. In the second game they played Napanee and won 6 to 0. This was a very close game until Napanee made the mistake of waking up 'the sleeping giant,"' Dave Burnett who then went on a scoring rampage with 5 goals and 1 assist. Craig Men- zies had a great game also with a goal and 3 assist. Picking up assists were Greg Warriner with 2, Lee Wilbur and Andy Sytsma with 1 each. Bill Eade played one of his best games in goal stopping 2 clean cut breakaways and numerous other saves to register the shutout. In the championship game the Eagles played Lindsay and won it all 8 to 4. Scoring for the Eagles were Dave Culbert assisted by John Har- man and Chris Lane; Dave Burnett assisted by Craig Menzies; Dave Culbert clicked again assisted by Lee Wilbur and John Harman. Scott Burke scored 2 in a row set up by Rob Baker twice, assisted by Andy Sytsma and Derek Dexter. Rob Baker then scored one himself assisted by Derek Dexter. Craig Menzies assisted by Dave Burnett and Greg Warriner. Andy Sytsma got the last goal on a nifty wrist shot assisted by Scott Burke and Chris Lane. John Moore and Bill Eades shared the goalten- ding and both played well. Scott Burke was named M.V.P. for this game for his fine efforts. In the consolation championship game Huntsville eliminated Ux- bridge by the score of 7-3. In exhibition play on November 11th the Eagles played Little Britain and won 3 to 1. Scoring for Port were Dave Burnett assisted by Craig Menzies and Greg Warriner; Craig Menzies assisted by Dave Culbert and Andy Sytsma - John Harman assisted by Steve Durham and Chris Cookman. The Eagles next home game 1s November 25 against Bowmanville 9 pm. Next tournament is in Ban- croft on the weekend of December 7th and 8th Support Minor Hockey and the lcagles display of hockey to win the tournament with three straight victories, including one in over: time. (See story for details) Doug Coates presents the Coalition Acres Farm trophy to Port Perry Eagles Captain Craig Menzies after the team doubled Lind- say 8-4 in the final game to win the Midget tournament in Port Perry on Saturday. At left is Eagle Scott Burke who had two goals and two assists in the final game and was named the MVP for a fine performance. The Eagles whipped Napanee 6-0 and edged by Huntsville 3-2 en route to the championship. (See story) Bantam B's win the consolation by Derek Fitzgerald On Saturday, November 16, Sport- sland Bantam B's travelled to Lit- tle Britain to play in the Little Bri- tain Bantam No 2 tournament. Ports first game of the day ended with a 2 to 0 defeat by the hosting team. Little Britain. Port played a tough game but the puck wasn't bouncing their way Richard King played a solid game in net to keep the score close Port's second game went well for them as they defeated Oshawa Canadians with a good over all team effort. 4 to 1 The scoring opened with 3 minutes to go in the first period with David Irvine scoring for Port with an assist credited to Mat (Chew Durward Port's next goal came less than a minute later unassisted by Irvine again At the 6 42 mark in the secord period Oshawa got their first and only goal of the game but this didn't stop Port from scoring twice more and winn ing the game 4to 1 Scoring the 3rd goal for Port was Big Rob Brown assists for that goal went to Derek Fitzgerald and Kevin (Gab) Gibson The final goal was scored by Gab again, assists going to Blair (Dobal) Bailey and Todd Poppleton This win put Port into the Consolation Finals against arch rival Uxbridge Port started the scoring in the first period with Larry Collins tally- ing and Digger Darren Caudle and Dawid Irvine assisting Ports second goal was scored by Derek Fit zgerald at the 55 second mark in the first period assists credited to Big Rob Brown and Gab Gibson But the strong fighting Uxbridge team came within reach of 1 behind us early in the second period Then a goal by David Irvine put us ahead and the two assists on that goal were from Big Rob Brown and Mat Chew) Durward Uxbridge got one more later but Port got the final goal by Todd Poppleton with Blair 'Dobal) Bailey and Big Rob Brown assisting and held onto a 4to2 vic tory Thus Port won the Consolatic: in their first tournament this season (ret well soon goes out to Terry May who was injured in the first game with a fractured ankle and John Lally who went to the hospital with an injured shoulder SU Tn SR da ww wile BS ST LM Ga VIL DMNA TOR rs SAN Tg Maciel Lig CRT RIN RE CTL SERVE RAEI
