28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 10, 1985 When you meet "Mr. Wonderful" Carl Kroonenberg, be careful how you shake his hand. Chances are the wrestling champ could have you in the same pretzel as this unlucky chump, who is seconds away from a back first body slam. Even though you've never met. Who is Carl Kroonenberg? Well, next to you, Mr. Wonderful, Carl looks like someone to kick sand at on the beach, but he's pretty strong for someone who hovers around the 160 pound mark. His older brother Jeff has a good 50 pounds on him but Carl has been known to toss old Jeff in the air like a well-oiled frisbee. Nobody likes to play touch football with Carl anymore, you see, 'cause his touch is a tad on the rough side.' And you're to thank for that, Mr. Wonderful. He's been watching you on the boob tube's World Wrestling Federation shows for as long as he can remember, and he's your greatest fan. "I'm pretty picky about the wrestlers 1 like. If I vote for somebody, it's got to be somebody good," he says. *'I like Mr. Wonder- ful because he goes into the ring and gets things done, no messing around. He's a wrecking machine. Not only is he a fan, the 19 year old Scugog Island legend is also a pupil, and has picked up everything he knows about wrestling from wat- ching TV. "When I was real small, seven or eight, usually I had nothing to do on a Saturday. One of the things on the agenda was wrestling so I watched it." As Carl sat glued to his parents' set (his mom and dad are Cathy and Emiel Kroonenberg, local restaurant owners), images of oily sweat-slicked bodies glorified with more muscles than brains, would flash by, teaching Carl the techni- que of body slams, suplex's and assorted headlocks. And with the sudden popularity of the sport, brought on by people like Hulk Hogan, Mr. T. Cyndi Lauper and Jesse the Body Ventura, wrestl- ing 1s no longer just a Saturday afternoon time-filler. Wrestling videos line the shelves of local stores and are so popular they have to be reserved well in ad- vance Wrestling magazines sell quicker than Playboy centrefolds and Maple Leaf Gardens 1s con- sistently packed with fans when a wrestling road show arrives in the big smoke Even eggheads who traditionally turned their noses up at such violent antics have come out of the closet with wrestling fever Wrestlers have become celebrities -- witness Hulk Hogan who has played himself in daytime soap opera, and has been known to show off his biceps on the Johnny Carson circus But Carl 1s secure in the knowledge that he was a true blue wrestling fan before any of this celebrity stuff started happening And it's because of his dedication that he took on General Vamer Secondary School's top wrestlers he had 40 competitors to contend aith a few weeks ago and came out with the championship trophy The tournament was a carnival to behold I didn't think [ was going to win," Carl says. "I checked with the coaches to see what I could and couldn't do in the figats, and it turn- ed out I couldn't do most of it." The guys he was up against were trained in traditional wrestling, the stuff you see in the Olympics, not the rough-and-tumble theatre seen on television. As his competitiors dropped like flies in a flurry of 'unusual' moves, Carl used every trick he had learnt from the likes of you, Mr. Wonder- ful. Coaches shook their heads in amazement and referees continual- ly questioned the legality of Carl's moves. **Can he DO that? echoed off the gymnasium walls just as often as squeals of pain. In his words, Carl was a wrecking arl is a real wrecking machine machine. Since then he's had offers to join the school's wrestling team but already coaches are trying to round off his slightly rough edges into a more docile form of the sport. Carl's not too sure he wants that. Besides, he has bigger and better ideas. Mainly, he'd like to team up with his brother Jeff and form a tag team to be pitted against the kind of folks he usually sees on a screen. His first step is submitting an en- try in TV's Thrill o f a Lifetime. "That would be my ultimate thrill," he swoons. "*Couldn't you just see me and Jeff on TV?" Looks like high school wrestling will never be the same.
