Three weeks ago we were amazed to find we were in shared company, two lovely Does and a magnificent antlered Buck The sight of them was breathtaking. The dogs and I had just come up from the bottom of the hill and stan- ding motionless in the middle of the field were these two gorgeous animals, a picture 1 will always regret never having taken They seemed to sense we meant no harm and we watched each other silently for at least twenty minutes, then the tails went up and they bounced back into the woods The first ime Bea saw all three she talked softly to.them while she groomed her dogs The deer watch- ed patiently, curious though unafraid When she finished they watched her go as they slowly mov- ed back into the woods Both of us feel honoured by their company, and the fact that we can tell friends and relatives that we have deer living almost in our own back yards. Every day we go out we hope for a chance to glimpse them because they truly are a beautiful sight to see Bea and 1 both fear for them because of the snowmobiles but when | was out Saturday morning | realized there was an even more real danger As I reached the bot- tom of the hill the dogs began to bark furiously and I saw the flash of red jackets and the deer frantical- ly crashing through the woods. HUNTERS? At first | thought it was kids playing, but when they disap- peared so quickly I realized who they were. The dogs and | had scared them, and thankfully the deer as well. We should be proud that the deer are here in our town, by choice with no fence to keep them their beauty and gentleness ours to enjoy. Why 1s there a need to hang their heads as trophies on our walls when five minutes away we can see them in their natural habitat, wild and free" Magnificent in their beauty from the woods they watch our children play and our dogs run, with some fear yes, but with more curiosity | think It makes me sad to think of how few places there are for the wild life but they are still willing to share 1t with us. The kids were super Dear Sir: As the lunch-room convenor for this year's '"Souper Bazaar and Lunch" 1 would like to send ac- colades to everyone involved in the planning and providing for this suc- cessful event In particular a very special "Thank You to everyone of the young people involved for the superlative service they provided as waiters and waitresses for the event To say they were good 1s an understatement There 1s something about the help of young people that is just a httle more precious than adult aid, who because of our age and experience are supposed to be better at these things Their lovely smiles and in- fectious enthusiasm are quite simp- ly 'joy spreaders." All of our customers expressed delight with the excellent service received and several of these very satisfied people left "tips," which the children unanimously decided would go to the proceeds of the day. The article states that children are required by law to attend school and striking teachers can "serious- ly jeopardize" the educational pro- cess. Is the Board not jeopardizing the 'educational process' when a student who is identified as having learning difficulties does not get the necessary assistance for over a year because of the red tape and paper work that must be gone through? Is the Board not jeopardizing the "educational process' when inade- S.A.D.D. meeting Dear Sir: Port Perry has yet another reason to re-joice this season. The area's young people have taken action to change the problem that affects us all. They are providing a time and place where the community can participate in an open discussion about drinking and driving. Our support and encouragement as parents, community leaders and 'users of the road' is necessary. In my opinion, the teachers in Durham Region and Scugog Township in particular are doing an excellent job in light of what is ex- pected of them and considering the conditions they are forced to work in If Mr Neil Hunter or any of the other councillors would like to get some first-hand insight into the demanding job of educating not on- ly one but thirty or more inquisitive, active young human beings, perhaps something could be arrang- ed. You might find "'over-paid' is definitely not an appropriate description of teachers of today.
