(From page 1) Beacock of Port Perry, Bonnie Branton of Seagrave, Bob Stitt of Oshawa, Paul Green of Blackstock, Lynda Kendry of Port Perry, Mae Smitherman of Port Perry, Eileen McIntosh of Seagrave and Betty Somerville of Seagrave. As judges pointed out at the end of the contest, all the puddings were delicious. Their job, they decided, was sweet, but tough. But when it was all said and done, the winner was Mae Smitherman with runners-up Lynda Kendry and Bonnie Branton. Mae's pudding was a miracle of taste, reasons why Christmas is one of the most popular holidays of the year. (Her recipe follows). Which isn't to say that everyone else's wasn't terrific. Paul Green, just a youngster com- pared to his older competitors, started making Christmas puddings five years agb after his grand- mother's death, to keep alive her memory and the delicious pudding tradition. Bob Stitt has also been the pud- ding expert in his family for a long time and has no qualms about enter- ing a female-dominated cooking contest. He wrapped his in a special way too, in a thick cheesecloth, steaming hot. Grace Beacock's was decorated beautifully on a fancy plate with two bright red cherries topping off a dark sauce, and both Eileen McIn- tosh and Betty Somerville came up with light-coloured sauces, equally delicious but quite different. And as Star reporter Cathy Robb claims, her mother Dorothy didn't win because she's her mother. "Otherwise she would of won," she says. Of course everyone knows Cathy doesn't know which end her pudding is breaded on anyways. So, to get down to what everyone is waiting for, here's the finest pud- ding recipe in Scugog, courtesty of Mae Smitherman.
