Sympathy to Mahaffy clan Blackstock and Area News by Joyce Kelly and Bob Petch, Kent and Catherine, Aurora; and Fred and Nancy Paw- ly, Port Hope. Most of the post-secondary students at the varied universities and colleges have returned to their homes for some welcome holidays. Telephone lines will probably be fre- quently tied up as these young peo- ple catch up on each others ac- tivities. Welcome home, kids. On Friday and Saturday evenings, Rev. and Mrs. Dale Davis held Open House at the Manse and welcomed a large number of friends who en- joyed a time of visiting at this Christmas season. Sorry to report that Mrs. Rhoda Larmer suffered a fall and broke her arm. We join her many friends in wishing you a speedy recovery. The Christmas Concert of the Sympathy is extended to Bill and Jean Mahaffy on the sudden passing of Bill's brother Bob Mahaffy at St. Marys very suddenly. Bill and Jean along with Grant McLaughlin at- tended the funeral services on Mond ay. Bob spent his younger years at Purple Hill and will be remembered by the older residents of this area. Jim and Barbara Sleep, Blaine and Bristol, enjoyed a fabulous holi- day to Hawaii recently. What a way to beat the blahs that accompanied those grey days that have been around for many weeks. Ae United Church Sunday School was enjoyed by a fine number on Sunday evening. Superintendent Judy Gilbank welcomed everyone. The programme "The Mystery of the Paper Bells" involved the entire Sunday School. Various numbers in- cluded songs, rhythm bands, choral speaking and readings. As usual, the evening concluded with a social time. It was a very enjoyable pro- gramme that set the scene beautifully for Christmas. The Afternoon Unit of the UCW met for the Christmas meeting on Tuesday afternoon at the home of Aileen Byers with 14 present. Agnes Waters and Grace Hall assisted the hostess by serving a lovely Christmas dessert. The leader Jean Adams began by reading the Christmas Creed. The hymn "Hark The Herald Angels Sing" was sung. Flora Samells had charge of devo- tions and read a part of the Christmas story from Luke and a chapter from the Devotional Book called Gifts from Christ. This was followed by prayer and the singing of Joy To The World. Joan Grove assisted with her accordian. The minutes of the last meeting and a short business period was followed by each one contributing to the programme humorous readings, serious story, music and thoughts on Christmas. Some items were taken from an Old Family Herald, a good magazine of former years. The meeting closed with the usual Theme Bendiction. The Christmas O.N.O. meeting was held at the home of Ellen Russell. Following the usual Trivial Pursuit questions the November minutes were read and approved after which correspondence was read. After the treasurer's report, the upcoming New Year's Eve Dance was discussed. The dance will begin at 9:00 p.m. Sandra Hoskin reported that there are still a few tickets left, so if you would like one call her at 986-5574. The 1986 ex- ecutive is tentatively set.
