Modest venture is furned into local history book About four years ago, Allen Mar- tyn decided it was time to record the history of the Martyn family from the time his great grandfather William John left England in 1846 with six children to settle in Canada. What started out for Allen as a modest venture to cover the family history soon evolved into a more detailed story that takes an in- teresting look at life in the Port Perry-Prince Albert area over the past 50 years. From conversations with members of his own family and drawing from his own memories as ~ a young man working at a wide variety of jobs Allen has included some vivid descriptions of what life was like in years gone by. Just before Christmas, he took his notes to a local printer, along with numerous photographs, and the result is a 50 page booklet entitled "The Life of Allen J. Martyn and History of the Martyn Family 1824-1985." "I have tried to relate the present day to way things were 40 and 50 years ago,"' Allen told the Star recently. Allen, who was born in Prince Albert 66 years ago, and still works in the area as a carpenter, admits with a smile that people who know him, and even members of his own family, might be surprised that he has written and had published a book of local and family history. He's had a great many jobs over the last 50 years, including a stint back in 1939 when he worked for his brother Earl on the farm for 68 cents per day. He notes in the book that the second year, "Earl got real generous and gave me a raise to $300 per year." He had been mak- ing $200 annually. After working in farming and cut- ting trees, Allen got into the milk transport business in 1950 and sold" it 20 years later. He then took up carpentry and cabinet-making on a full time basis. - i He obviously has an eye for detail, for throughout the book are anec- dotes, descriptions and some very interesting facts about what things used to cost in yesteryear. Much of the book is written in the first person, in an easy style that's fun to read. After handing out copies of the book to family members in the Port Perry area, Allen says he's made arrangements with a couple of local Port Perry.
