20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 28, 1986 Sports Team must move quickly to win series MoJacks up against Junior C wall The Port Perry MoJacks have nowhere to go but up. But they'd bet- ter move quickly or the Junior C season will soon be over. The MoJacks are against the pro- verbial wall in their best of seven quarter final playoff series with the Cobourg Cougars after losing the first two games by scores of 9-4 and 7-5. (Game three in the series was played Monday, Cobourg) game Jan. 20 in Cobourg with a 9-4 victory in which they scored six times in the middle period, in- cluding three power plays and two * while short-handed. The MoJacks scored twice in the first, once in the second and added another in the final period. Rob Sedore, Jeff McColl, Paul Butter- worth and Darren Nesbitt counted for goals for the MoJacks. Tim Fawcett clicked three times for the Cougars and Brian Stadtke chipped in with a pair. Game two at the Scugog Arena last Sunday night was a close check- ing affair for the first 20 minutes as neither team was able to muster much offensive power. Ken Harman for the MoJacks and Scott Birkhof for the Cougars turned aside all the pucks thrown in their direction. The second period was just three minutes old when the Cougars hit the board first as Doug Smith found - the range with a shot to the stick side of Harman. Just before the mid point in the period, the MoJacks applied sus- tained pressure around the Cougar net and it paid off as captain Brian Nicholson took a pass from the cor- . ner by Andy Sutch and hit the net from about 15 feet in front. But the Cougars went ahead for good as they scored two quick goals on two-on-one breaks with Ray Mur- phy and Doug Smith doing the : i ' : ' ' 144 ' $4 # (WR ey } { } -v iii ------------ ---- --- en - . ye Jan. 27 in damage. The first was on a power play and the second came as the teams were five aside. At 18:44, it looked like the Mo- Jacks might get the lift they were looking for as defenseman Darren Nesbitt made a fine play to trap the puck at the Cougar blue line. He then fed a perfect pass in front to " Paul Butterworth who made no _ mistake with a back-hand shot. But a minute later, the Cougars restored the two goal lead as Jeff Waldie was allowed to walk in front - of Harman for an easy marker. The MoJack defense was nowhere to be seen on this play. With the third period just under- way, Brian Nicholson netted his se- cond of the game on a weird kind of play. Andy Sutch made a good move to get around a Cobourg defender -and tried to flip the puck over the fallen netminder. The disc bounced high in the air and Nicholson managed to tip it with his stick before it crossed the line. But again, any hope the MoJacks might have had to gain some momentum was snuffed out three minutes later when Brian Stadke redirected a shot from the blue line "to make it 5-3. "And the goal that broke the Mo- Jacks back came at 6:15 when Waldie fired at Harman who trap- ped the puck in his glove and then watched it trickle out and into the cage. That made it 6-3 and it looked like the curtain for Port Perry. However, Brian Hendricks did some strong work behind the . Cougar net at 9:25, coming up with the puck and slipping it in the side door for a 6-4 score. And at 14:20, the MoJacks were right back in it when Nicholson com- pleted his hat trick on the power play. He took a pass from Sutch, moved to his left and drilled a wrist shot from the deep slot area to make ! - the score 6-5. For the next several minutes, the MoJacks buzzed around the Cougar net putting all kinds of pressure on Birkhof, but they were not able to get the equalizer. With 39 seconds left, Tim Fawcett put the game away for the Cougars as he scampered in home free on a breakaway to give his team the 7-5 victory. It was a disappointing loss for the team and it was the same lack of consistency in this game that has been the MoJacks downfall for the second half of the season. The team has won just twice since December 22 (losing 8 and tying once). In those 11 games, the team has given up 74 goals. Game three in the series was played Monday night in Cobourg, and game four is slated for the Scugog Arena this Friday evening January 31 with face-off at 8:30 P.M. "If the MoJacks can keep it alive with a victory, game six will also be at the Scugog Arena this coming Sun- 'day night at 7:30 P.M. Game five will go Saturday night in Cobourg (if necessary). ~~.
