12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 4, 1986 The Case of the Curious Ashburn and Area News by Florence Ashton At Burns Church last Sunday, Rév. McEntyre's message was most © interesting and thought provoking. His sermon title was "The Case of the Curious Queen', based on the text from St. Luke 11, verse 31. The queen was Queen Sheba. The scrip- tures were read by Bill Gardner and Doug Ashton. The choir sang "l am Thine, O Lord." An invitation has been received from Brooklin United Church to at- tend the World Day of Prayer Ser- vice on Friday, March 7at 7:30 P.M. The theme this year is "Choose Life in its Fullest." This is an all denominational service and everyone is welcome to attend. The Brooklin Horticulture Socie- ty met in the lower hall of the United Church last Wednesday evening. President Betty Van Buuren, con- ducted the meeting and "Fun with Flora' was played, which took the form of a cross word puzzle about gardening. Ken Brown showed some beautiful slides of bulbs and other flowers. There was also a question and answer period when Ken gave lots of answers and good advice. Chrissie McKinney thanked Ken U's Spring - = Again! and % we're opening for business I ~ & BARBEQUE ZR ~ / ¢ and stated how happy we are to have a professional gardner with us at all the meetings. A lovely lunch was served by Doris Hoskins and Ruby Jones. The next meeting will be on March 26. The programme will be all about fertilizers, so come out and learn how to have the best garden ever this year. There is a sales table of garden things and a good library for the members to en- joy. Come and enjoy a friendly meeting. New members always welcome. The Ladies winners for the euchre party last Thursday evening were Mary Housego and Ruby Smith. The men's winners went to Ray Porter and Ab Janigua. Wilma Lynde had the most lone hands. The door prize was won by Joy Bright. The 50/50 draw went to Ruby Smith. There were 10 tables played and the next party is Thursday, March 13. Doug and Florence Ashton visited recently with Cecil and Jean Vicars of Fergus, and Mrs. Ruth Purdy of Mono Centre. Lucille Gray took as her topic - The greatest happiness is love. Scripture was taken from John, Hymn 126 was sung 'Come Let Us Sing Of A Wonderful Love.' Lucille gave a reading "Love Never Faileth." Hymn 286 'Thee Will I Love, My Strength, My Tower" followed by a reading "Only God Can Make A Miracle." Pat Kingstone took charge of the business and spoke on advice for Lent followed by prayer. The word 'Dorcas' will be used for the roll call. World Day of Prayer will be March 7th at 2 p.m. at Presbyterian Church, Port Perry. Pat and Bernice will have next meeting at the Church March 6th at 2 p.m. A delicious lunch was served by Lucille. Session and Stewarts at Utica Church on Thursday at 8 p.m. The Sunday School are having an afternoon of outdoor activities which will include sleigh-riding, ski- ing, etc., at Epsom from 2-4 p.m. this Sunday. There will be ' refreshments at the Church follow- ing. All in the community are in- vited to participate. On -Tuesday, March 11th, the U.C.W. will hold their meeting at the home of Lil Lindsay at 1:30 p.m. starting with dessert and refreshments. All ladies are welcome to attend. (Think green) The Utica Memory Hall Board will hold their annual meeting on Sunday, March 9th, starting at 2 p.m. Come out, support your Hall Board and bring your enthusiasm with you. It appears that the euchre result from Friday have been lost, so I on- ly have the freeze-out results. 1st was Bernice Wells and Marlene Skinner, 2nd was Lena Ogden and BEAUTIFUL Rosetta Evans. There will be another euchre in two weeks. Mrs. Crosier had a visit this week from her daughter Mrs. Jean Scott of London. Mrs. Mildred Thompson and Mrs. Phyllis Clarke called on Mr. and Mrs. Don Lee at Woodville on Sun- day and had supper at the Bonfire Restaurant. Bill Fielding and Donna Wakeford of Oshawa were Sunday supper guests with his parents Earl and Irene. Congratulations to Mr. Ralph Rudkin who has a new grand- daughter born on Saturday at Oshawa Hospital to Bev and Craig Isherwood, who live in Whitby. Mr. and Mrs. Lorne Slute were supper guests on Friday of son Bill and family of Seagrave. Mrs. Eva Sutcliffe accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Bray on Sun- day when they visited with Mr. and Mrs. Dave Bartle at Orangeville.
