ey 1 ¥ » 4 20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 4, 1986 Sports by Mark Barkey The Goreski Insulation Bantams found themselves looking at a possi- ble elimination on February 24 as they were down two games to one against Uxbridge. -The Bantams arrived at the arena early for a pre-game meeting before ~ facing Uxbridge and talked about what had to be done to get rid of these foes who give our coaches and parents ulcers. With good pointers from all members Port awaited for the coaches to arrive to see what they had to say. Clark and Todd came in the dressing room and gave us a speech that really got us going. 4 oo Ce Faas AF HAY » AT MV Ra ror oe? oe ET LEEW Sar 4 Port Bantam goalie Brad Bricknell "protects his turf" during playoff action Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. The Bantams whipped Gananoque 7-1 in this game to bounce back in a big way after dropping the first game 3-1. The game was a close one right from the beginning face-off with Port controlling a little more of the play. Hard work finally paid off at the 8:55 mark of the first period as Mark Barkey scored assisted by Jamie Menzies. With goals come en- thusiasm and it was flowing like a river on the Port bench with everybody filled with team spirit. The hard work continued and Port went up by two as Clair Cornish scored assisted by Mark Barkey and Phil McBride. The first period end- ed and Port was in command. The second period saw Uxbridge scoring the first goal just four minutes old. Port didn't let that stop them as they scored two minutes later on a goal from Warren Geer assisted by Brad Menzies. The break between the se- cond and third period finally came and Port had a convincing lead of 3-1. The enemies came out for another period and Uxbridge struck quick and hard with two goals about one minutes apart. When Port realized just what was happening they began to fight back. The game was tied for quite a while until Clair Cornish found a loose puck in the goal mouth and stuffed it in assisted by Steve Connors and Mark Barkey. The time finally wound down and Port Game three in this series is set for the Scugog Arena this Thursday night with face-off at 8:00 p.m. Bricknell had a strong game in net for Port "Perry and lost his shutout late in the third with the game well out of reach. Eagles by a thread by Hillis Wilbur - The Grant Menzies Eagles have their backs to the wall in the playoff series with Napanee, trailing 5 points to 1 in a best 3 out of 5 series. In the first game of the series they came out flying low and got clipped to the tune of 9 to 2. Scoring for the Eagles were Dave Culbert assisted by John Harman and Steve Durham unassisted. John Moore did his best Tweens defeated 8-3 On Sunday March 2nd the Chris Allen Aluminum Tweens met Mariposa Tweens in their first game of League Playoffs. The first period showed hope of winning this game as everyone was playing hard and making some good in goal. In the second game in Napanee they jumped out to a 2 to 0 lead, on goals by Chris Cookman assisted by Lee Wilbur and Dave Burnett and Rob Baker unassisted. The Eagles ran into penalty trouble and , Napanee tied it up and then went ahead 4-2. Dave Burnett made it close when he potted one assisted by Craig Menzies, but they fell short as plays, however, in the second period we let Mariposa Tweens take over power of the ring and they won 8-3. Goals were scored by Lisa Levy 1 and Nicole Slack 2. Assists were by Heather Lawrence, Lisa Levy and Nicky Beare. Napanee won 6 to 3 with the final goal scored in the empty net. On Sunday afternoon, the third game was played in Napanee again, the Eagles again jumped out to an early 2 to 0 lead but saw it fade as Napanee came back to tie the game and with 10 minutes of ovetime the score was still tied at 2. The next game is in Port Perry Wednesday night, March 5 at 8:30 p.m. We hope to see lots of fans out to cheer the Eagles on as the way they have been playing the last 2 games, they can still win this series with some breaks and lots of fan support. left the ice with a huge victory to their credit. The next game was to be played in Uxbridge the following Wednes- day to decide what team would go on in the play-offs. Port got the green light and headed into what could be their last game of the year. The puck was dropped, the game had started, and stomachs turned to jelly. Port felt a little bit more relax- ed as Shawn Nanay calmy slid one by the Uxbridge goalie assisted by Mike Sorley. Uxbridge then played harder, but so did Port, but found themselves hemmed in until Mark Barkey got a breakaway. This was our chance to go up by two and maybe win! Did he score? No way! Oh well, what else is new? The first period ticked away and then with 7:22 remaining Mark Barkey scored unassisted. The second period roll- ed around and Port found themselves in penalty trouble, but good penalty killing kept Uxbridge 0 for 6. The second period went scoreless but not for lack of trying as Port had more chances than they knew what to do with. The third period came quickly and only one goal was scored and it was from Uxbridge. The final buzzer sounded and Port was ecstatic. The team jumped over the boards and malled our poor goalie, Brad Bricknell, who we must thank because he played strongly for us throughout the series. The team headed to the dressing room and celebrated with pop from our spon- sor. Thanks a lot, Mr. Goreski! Port found themselves playing Gananoque next, and they were ready. It's a real shame Uxbridge couldn't go, but don't worry guys! I hear Foxhead Golf Course opens early this season! After the excitement and elimina- tion of Uxbridge, Port travelled to Gananoque and left with a disap- pointing 3-1 loss. The game dragged on with no score for quite a while until Ganano- que scored at the 12:17 mark to take a 1-0 lead. With what seemed to be hundreds of chances, Port just couldn't slip one by the hot Ganano- que goaltender. Port controlled about 85 percent of the play and then Gananoque broke loose at the 9:13 mark to take a convincing 2-0 lead. The Port squad returned to their claustrophobic dressing room to see if they could get themselves going and get a win under their belts to go home with. The two teams took to the ice again and it only took Port 4:53 to get on the scoreboard as Jamie Bantams rebound with big wins Menzies scored on a pass from Mark Barkey. With Port struggling to tie the game up, they ran into penalty problems and Gananoque scored with just less than two minutes left in the game and thus won the game 3-1. Port drove home and forgot about the previous game, as thoughts were directed to the next game on Sunday. Port must have had a good night's sleep Saturday because they thumped Gananoque soundly by the score of 7-1. Port was ready to redeem themselves after their previous loss, because down deep we knew we were the better team. The first period was a good tight game with end to end checking. The first goal came at the 3:40 mark of the first period on a goal from Mike Sorley assisted by Phil McBride. The boys could then feel that old team spirit they had when they beat Uxbridge out and Jamie Menzies ripped one in assisted by Greg Stapleton. The first period ended with Port ahead by two. The puck was dropped for the second and Port was on fire. Warren Geer scored when the period was just two minutes old, assisting was Andrew Steele. Brad Traves sent a pass to Andrew. Steele who in turn gave it to Brad Menzies and Brad sent the little black disc whistling into the top corner before the goalie had a chance to react. Nice shot Chief! The next goal was scored by (again) ~ Brad Menzies assisted by Steve Connors. The break for the third rolled around and gave Port a well deserv- ed rest. With new energy and excite- ment spreading like wildfire, Port was ready for anything. Our sixth goal was scored by -- Guess who? Yes! Brad Menzies assisted by Steve Connors and Andrew (Bud) Steele. It was then that Gananoque got their lone goal to ruin Brad Bricknell's shut-out! Don't worry Brickie, maybe next time! Jeff Oke added a finishing touch to the cake-walk assisted beautiful- ly by Warren Geer and Brad Menzies. This ended the game and a rough game at that! With penalties totall- ing a whopping 76 minutes both coaches will not be allowed to coach the next game. This win was an im- portant one, giving Port the fire and drive they need to survive. The next game will be played at Port on Thursday March 6 at 8:00. So if you would like to see the All-Ontario Champions in action, come on out and give us that little bit of extra help that is appreciated so much.
