In this news column, I will discuss one of three options sponsored by the Ontario Govern- ment: '"'Start Up' while the next © time I will discuss "Ontario Youth Employment" and 'Summer Ex- perience '86." Last year in Ontario a total of 932 applications were approved from students wishing to start up a sum- mer business. Their applications to the Ministry of Skills Development were the continuation of a special project undertaken by the previous government. These 932 applications encom- passed 1,100 individuals in owner- ship of the various undertakings. The most notable fact of all is that on average each student business generated 2.5 jobs for other student! The principal criterion to qualify for funding under what is now known as the Student Venture Capital Program (Start Up) is that the applicant for funding intent to return to school for the fall semester. As a result, most of the businesses started are seasonal of nature. They include such things as house pain- ting, landscaping and window clean- Come by and ask Brent, ing. Frequently, the students who start these summer businesses re- apply the following summer for funds to restart the business. Some upon graduation, take the knowledge and experience they have acquired through the summers and put them to work in a full fledg- ed business. The funding, once again, is pro- vided under the Student Ventures Capital Program. If you, or a student you know, would like to learn more about how to start your own summer business, ATTENTION GOLFERS! with the support of the government of Ontario, you can call the Skills Development Hotline. The number is: 1-800-387-0777 Information about this program is -also available from your local 'Chamber of Commerce, the Royal Bank, the Placement Office of your college or university, the Guidance .Office at your high school, or your Canadian Employment Office. Others have found it to be a rewarding experience and you too may find this. Good Luck! nament deposits. the previous owners. Marlin "a Travel Seat Sale to Britain.
