RIN a a a, AL NL eis a coms Nissin a al TM Lo PN Trg i NR hi Blackstock and Area News by Joyce Kelly Now that the future has been sett]. ed for Cartwright High School with the acceptance by the Durham No Board of Education of the School Ac- commodation Committee's recom- mendation that C.H.S. remain open indefinitely. Now that this action has been taken, parents feel confi- dent that their students may enrol with absolutely no fear that the school will be closed before the students reach graduation. Hopeful- ly this will improve the numbers at- tending Grade 9. Local parents may be surprised to realize that our small High School is held in very high respect, not only by educators in our own system, but also in the many post-secondary facilities that our graduates attend. Because of the Board's agreement to reciprical busing from Port Perry, C.H.S. will be looking forward to increased numbers of students from the Port Perry area. The annual World Day of Prayer for this area will be held in Nestleton United Church on Friday, March 7, at 2 p.m. Last Tuesday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harry McLaughlin, Nestleton, were Marion and Tommy Hodge and Roy Werry. This was a birthday celebration for Tommy's birthday. Congratulations. Another birthday was celebrated when on Sunday, February 23rd, a surprise birthday party was held at the home of Doug and Linda Fallis in honour of Merlin Philp of Nestleton. Approximately thirty- five relatives, friends and neighbours attended this happy event. Merlin thanked everyone for their gifts, cards and best wishes. Happy birthday, Merlin. Craig Paisley will be appearing on a repeated showing of a television programme in the series Counter Point, which will be aired on Satur- day morning, at 11:30 on Channel 11. Craig was chosen as contestant on this programme from his Com- munications Course at Mohawk Col- lege. As part of this competition, Craig interviewed M.P. Sheila Copps, Knowlton Nash of TV news fame, actor Gordon Pinsent and the writer of the Biography of Harold Ballard. Parts of these interviews will be seen on the showing on Satur- day morning. Try not to miss it. The Lions Club Public Speaking Contest was held on 'Wednesday evening with the following speakers: Jennifer Fletcher, Ken- dra Reddy, Sheri Masterson, Chris Chorestecki and Susan Kyte. A number of our local councillors and their spouses attended the Good Roads Convention at the beg : of last week held at the Royal York Hotel, Toronto. Often this conven- tion is associated with severe winter storms affecting the roads of On- tario, but certainly this was not the case this year! Helen and Stuart Dorrell of Charlton, was in Southern Ontarion while Stuart attended his business meetings in Toronto, and Helen visited her mother Mrs. Elva Toms and other relatives. It was in- teresting to hear of Lisa's adven- tures in New Zealand as a Young Farmer on a sheep and dairy farm. Cartwright High School by Christina McLean One more week and the March } Break will be here! Some lucky souls will be sun tanning in Florida, some unfortunate souls will be working, and some smart souls will be sleeping in until 11:00 and wat- ching soaps all day. This year our school is selling royal blue sweat shirts with "'CART- WRIGHT CHARGERS 86' written across the front. Please get your money in this week. Our three house teams have been very busy reading and preparing for the tryouts for our annual Drama Night. This year, the plays are scheduled for the 24th and 25th of April. Good Luck to everyone with their practices. . NOTICE: If you haven't signed up for our annual Mudcat Bonspiel, do it now! You don't have to be a pro, and remember that we are just out there for fun. The Mudcat will be on March 10th at the Blackstock Arena. Our Curling Club had a great year and the first draw was won by Brian Van Camp, Shawn Hoskin, Christina McLean and Greg Wilson. The se- cond draw was won by Joy Werry, Esther Kelly, Scott Sutton and Stephanie Whitehead. Thank you for all of your help, Mr. Payne. Our girls' curling team of Julie Bryant, Tara Bailey, Elaine Kelly, Joy Werry and Natalie Green par- ticipated in the LOSSA curling com- petition in Uxbridge on February the 22nd. They played two very com- petitive and close games, but were defeated 6-5 by R.S. McLaughlin and 8-6 by Anderson Collegiate. Our boys' curling team also par- ticipated in the LOSSA competition in Uxbridge on February th 19th. The team was made up of Brian Van Camp, Jay Van Camp, Robert Um- phrey, Shawn Hoskin, and Scott Fletcher. The guys experienced "the agony of defeat,' but I was told they had a great time.
