'Council received two official let- ters signed by the president and past * president (of the Fair Board) sup- porting the move. We (council) would have honoured the current lease with the Fair Board if that's what they wanted," he told the Star last Friday. And he added that if the Fair Board changes its mind about the move before the end of the month, the council could pull out of the deal with the Board of Education for the new school site. Over the past week, the Star heard from several people who are upset that the Fairgrounds will be moved after the Fair this year to a new site near the Scugog Arena. One of those is Clare Vernon, a former president of the Fair Board who states in a letter to the editor in this week's Star that moving the Fair across Durham Road 8 could spell the end of the Fair as it is known. He also says the decision to make the move was never put to a vote of the full Fair Board directorship. Mr. Vernon was one of those who attended a stormy meeting of the Fair Board directors March 12. He told the star later he wonders where the money is going to come from to create the new site for a Fairground. Bruce Cummings, who attended the meeting last week as part of a 'delegation of horsemen told the Star he is very disappointed about the move because it appears as if the new site will not include a race- track for the horses. "Horse racing has always been a part of the Fairgrounds and the Fair. The horse races brought a lot of people into the Fair. What are we replacing them with, a beer garden and a demolition derby?" Mr. Cummings also said in his opinion the Township should have tried to get a better price for the seven acres of land from the Board of Education. He said the $115,000 which the School Board has agreed to pay will not go very far to creating a new fair site. He estimated that the cost of building a half-mile horse race track could be as high as $100,000. "The Township is giving the School Board a real break on the cost of this land," he said. While Mr. Cummings expressed bitterness at the fact the Fair is moving, he conceded that the chances of stopping it at this time are virtually nil. Earl Martyn of Port Perry also said he is not happy with the move of the Fairgrounds. 'It's a land- mark there. I think we are losing some of the life-styles of the com- munity. Why can't the Fairgrounds be saved?" he added. Mr. Martyn said the School Board could look elsewhere for a new site for a school, and he doesn't believe that if the Board was not able to get the Fairgrounds site for a new school, it might not be built. However, Mayor Taylor told the Star that if the School Board didn't get the site it wanted at the Fairgrounds, it would delay con- struction of the school by a year, at least. The School Board wants to start construction of the Kindergartento grade six school late this fall and Opposition grows to plan to re-locate Fairgrounds have the doors open for classes in September, 1987. The Mayor also said the council is 'prepared to earmark the money © from the sale of the land towards the preparation of the new Fairgrounds site near the arena. And he defend- ed the council's decision to accept the $115,000. He noted that an in- dependent appraisal of what the seven acres of land is worth put the price at about $78,000. Stewart Diceman, immediate past president of the Fair Board said directors who have attended meetings were kept informed of the pending move. '""The present grounds have serv- ed us well, but the time had come for a move," he said, adding he is con- vinced the new site will prove bet- ter for the Fair because it will pro- vide more space. The decision to accept the School Board's offer for the land was made by the Township council March 10. The School Board wants the sale finalized by the end of this month. Meanwhile, those opposed to mov- ing the Fair have circulated a peti- tion in the community and as of Monday morning had collected more than 300 names in support. They plan to bring the petition to the attention of Township council in a last-ditch effort to stop the sale of the seven acres to the Board of Education.
