A time of rest for both the parents and the twelve young ladies of the Port Perry Petite C team... Valerie Payne, Sarah Coyne, Amanda Webb, Vanessa Mumford, Vicki Stainton, Leea Kinnunen, Melissa Pereman, Brandy Harris, Jean Templeman, Sara Wanamaker, Shannon Brown and Michelle Fitzpatrick. The Petite C's ended their year at the Regionals in Hastings and ~ Campbellford held March 21, 22, and 23. This being their first overnight excursion,the previous week was full of excitement and anticipation of the coming trip. At 4 p.m. on March 21 in Hastings we met Whitby. The teams were quite evenly matched and our girls kept the pace until the final few minutes when Whitby scored several unanswered goals. Final - score 5-1 in favour of Whitby. Michelle Fitzpatrick scored our on-- ly goal assisted by Leea Kinnunen. Again in Hastings the same even- ing we played an old rival, Lindsay. In the past we have been able to give them a run for their money but it wasn't to be. Lindsay was definite- ly out to win and succeeded with a score of 14-2. Leea Kinnunen pick- ed up one goal and one assist; Valerie Payne one goal and one assist with an assist each for Vanessa Mumford and Jean Templeman. Our final game was in Camp- bellford at 10 a.m. on Saturday mor- ning against Sunderland. These girls have size and experience on their side plus the confidence obtain- .ed through earlier victories. Our girls were enthusiastic to the end but couldn't get those shots passed the Sunderland goalie. Not only during this tournament but throughout the year these girls have been able to sing Port Perry cheers at their loudest . and smile with great sincereity at the opposition, even after a major defeat. Congratulation girls, we're all proud of you. Looking back over this our first season of play, we recall the joys of success and the disappointment and frustration of other days. With ex- perience and practice comes im- provement, increased self con- fidence and success. With this in mind, we know the girls are already looking forward to next season. See you all next season. by Mark Barkey After dispatching their semi-final rivals Alliston in three straight games, the Port Perry Bantams opened the defense of their all- Ontario title with two weekend games against Tilbury. After a long bus ride to this com- munity near Windsor, it was good news and bad news for the Port squad as they won the first then dropped the second. On Saturday March 22, the Goreski Insulation Bantams travell- ed to Tilbury to engage in the All- Ontario Championship and they split the two games. The first of the two was won by Port Perry as they doubled Tilbury 6-3. The first period was hard played by each of the teams and only one goal was scored and it was from Port at the 9:09 mark of the first period. Shawn Nanay scored as he deflected a Mike Sonley shot and he was fed by Clair Cornish. The first period flew by and the se- cond was quick to follow. Port dumped the puck into the enemy zone and quickly hustled to take possession. It was the hard-working Brad Menzies who fed it to Brad Traves on the point and Brad blasted one awesome slapshot past the damaged goaltender. Things were looking good at the moment from the Port squad but things aren't always as they appear. Tilbury finally came to life and exploded for two lightning quick goals just less than a minute apart - to tie the game at two apiece. The last goal of the second period was scored by Brad Menzies assisted by Brad (Fang) Traves and Clair Cor- nish. The break finally came and the two teams took a little rest with no complaints. I'm not sure what it was, the rest, the peptalk? Who knows, but Port came out breathing fire. Warren Geer scored on an unassisted effort to give Port a 4-2 lead and a little bit of breathing room. It was exactly one minute, one second later that Mark Barkey scored assisted by Jamie Menzies 'and Andrew Steele. The game was now wide open and Brad Traves scored his second of the game on a hard wrist shot that completely fool- ed the Tilbury goaltender, Scott Keith. Mark Barkey drew the assist on that one. Making a weak com- eback Tilbury scored but the game was now well out of reach. The hap- py Port players retired to their hotel, via their very comfortable coach. It may have been the late night, the pool, the swamming, or yes, even the golf! but Port Perry came up flat for the game on the following Sunday March 23. Port started out okay, but alas so did Tilbury as lady luck smiled in their direction and they scored the lone goal of the first period. The second period saw four goals being scored with two going to each of the teams. Unfortunately, the first of which was by Tilbury as they took a 2-0 lead, and their legions of fans showed their ap- preciation. Battling back was Clair Cornish, and with some outstanding balance, stuffed in Port's only goal as yet. Jeff Oke and Brad Traves both received assists on that one. Clair Cornish (one determined hockey player) filled our bench with cheers, yells and smiles as he found the mark in the bottom right corner of the net to tie the game at two. Port Bantams in a battle with Tilbury Tilbury scored their third with just a heart-breaking 1:43 left on the clock. The second-third period break rolled around and Port received a loud talk (ahem) by both coaches. Well, it seemed they wasted their breath as Tilbury scored just three minutes into the third, and it was Tilbury again about four minutes later to take a commanding 5-2 lead. The last goal of the third period was scored by Mark Barkey on the stick of the goaltender assisted by Jamie Menzies. Port's next three games are at home, (we won the toss, thank goodness) with the first two set for this Friday at 8:00 and Saturday at 2:30 so come on out and help cheer on Port Perry to another all-Ontario championship because you wouldn't believe what fans can do for a . hockey team. - Semi-Finals On Tuesday, March 18, the Port Perry Goreski Insulation Bantams - All-Stars said goodbye to their semi- final rivals Alliston as Port ham- mered them heavily by the score of 7-0. On a compact school bus, filled with players, parents, fans and hockey bags, Port travelled to Alliston and played what might have been their finest performance of the year. The bus, just a few miles away from the arena was filled with energetic yells and cheers from the Port Perry squad as the familiar song -- We Will Rock You, blasted in the back and Pierre Leduc added . some unique vocal styles of his own. to get Port ready to go. The opening period saw three goals being scored, all of which were from Port. The first goal was scored by Brad Menzies assisted by Warren Geer. The first goal is ever so important and this contributed to the near flawless performance that Port gave that night. The second goal of the night was scored by Warren Geer assisted by his hard-hitting linemates, Brad (Chief) Menzies and Jeff Oke. The final goal of the first period was scored by Warren Geer and assisting was Brad Men- zies and Brad Traves. The first period was played to perfection and the goals were im- portant but helping contribute to those goals were the 'diggers'. With Jamie Menzies, Greg Stapleton and Shawn Nanay doing some muscle-work along the boards and Refrigerator Phil McBride knocking players down time and time again, these were just some of the extras that made the win such a nice one. : The second period again saw another three goals being scored. Clair Cornish popped in Port's fourth goal on a perfect pass from Mike Sorley and Andrew Steele. The second period was winding on down but Port was obviously not content with just four. Warren Geer com- pleted his hat trick assisted by Brad Menzies and Jeff Oke. Just before the second period was about to take its last breath, Warren Geer scored his unbelieveable fourth goal of the night assisted by Jeff Oke and the "Bud", Andrew Steele.
