24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 8, 1986 Sports 4-2 home ice victory over Tilbury wraps the series up antams prevail for Ontario title by Mark Barkey The Goreski Insulation Bantams "from Port Perry are all-Ontario champions for the second straight year as they defeated a determined Tilbury team 4-2 Saturday afternoon to sweep the series four games to one, In front of a large crowd at the Scugog Arena, the outcome of the deciding match was in doubt right to the final buzzer as it took an empty-net goal by Brad Menzies with two seconds left to cement the victory. Last year, virtually the same Ban- tam team captured the Ontario championship in a wild and hectic overtime against a squad from Six Nations. Feelings of nervousness and familiar touch of butterflies tingling in the stomach were with each player as they awaited for the mo- ment of truth. The Port room was kept busy with constant chatter about the game and reminders to all players of what must be done in order to win the game and give Port Perry another all-Ontario. The team got the sign and out they went to tackle Tilbury for hopefully the last time. The home fans roared and cheered as their team hit the ice to Bantam captain Greg Stapleton accepts the all-Ontario cham- pionship trophy from OMHA convenor Jack Goddard. The Tilbury netminder had to sprawl to make a save on this play Saturday afternoon as the Port Perry Bantams defeated the visitors 4-2 help boost the morale of the players and chase some of the butterflies away. The first period started and Port started off like dynamite as they had the majority of the play until the 10:54 mark as Tilbury's number seven netted one to give them an early 1-0 lead. With that gold came confidence and it was definitely with Tilbury as they now had the better part of the play. The rest of the period was played as well as each team could and thus, went scoreless after Tilbury's goal. The teams lined up for the second, as this period was an important one for Port as Warren Geer scored assisted by Andrew Steele and Jeff Oke. This goal was scored late in the second and this was the only goal of the second period. The second-third period break came around and each team retired to their respective dressing rooms. Players took off their helmets and collapsed on the benches as buckets of sweat teem- ed down the faces of each player. The room was relatively quiet until a familiar face walked through the door. Our sponsor, Mr. Goreski, came in to wish the team luck and told us that we could do it and just try as hard as we could. Mr. Goreski did the same thing last year in the Ontario final and it worked. The players wondered if it could happen again. The third period was now underway and Port was on a ram- page. Port did everything right, they hit, passed and most important -- scored. It was Jeff Oke who scored to give Port the lead assisting was his linemate, Brad 'Menzies. With the play flowing their way, Clair Cor- nish scored to give us a lead of 3-1. Mike Sorley drew the assist on that one. The Tilbury coach pulled the goalie and it worked as they scored with just 1:08 remaining. Things were now tense, and Tilbury was threatening to tie it up until Brad Menzies shot the length of the ice in- to an empty net with just 0:02 left on the clock and Port Perry won the All-Ontario Championship. The players flooded off the bench and all swarmed our goalie Brad Bricknell who played another outstanding game between the pipes. The members of this All- Ontario team are: Brad Bricknell, Stacey Ballingall, Brad Traves, An- drew Steele, Brad Menzies, Jeff Oke, Warren Geer, Mark Barkey, Jamie Menzies, Greg Stapleton, Clair Cornish, Shawn Nanay, Mike Sorley, Phil McBride, and Steve Connors, and of course, our impor- tant coaching staff, Clark Menzies, Todd Menzies and Lorne Traves, to - whom we thank for a great and suc- cessful season and most of all our parents and fans who have faithful- ly supported us throughout the season. It's quite an accomplishment when a team did it with class and dignity which demonstrates they are true and fine champions. For the Port Perry Atoms it's wait until next year On Saturday April §, the Malmont Farm Atoms travelled to Napanee to play the 5th game of this best of seven series. Trailing the series 3 games to one the Atoms really had their work cut out for them. But when the final buzzer went the Green Machine lost the game 6-2 and gave the Eastern Ontario Championship to the Napanee squad. In the first period the Malmont held scoreless. The third period finally saw the Atoms register on the scoreboard as with only 1:10 showing Jody Logan popped his goal unassisted. Then with only 28 seconds left in the game Gavin Cochrane scored the final goal of the game and season assisted by Mike Sluggett. The coaches and management of the Malmont Farm Atoms would like to express our appreciation to all the players on the team for a job well done. You should all be proud of yourselves to advance to an Eastern Ontario Championship final series two years in a row. We wish you all a safe and happy summer and will see you next year at the Arena. | | | mney Moms show 'em a hole in the Napanee net. In the second period again the Atoms showed lots of style but it wasn't meant to be as they were to win the all-Ontario title four games to one. It was the second straight crown for the Port Perry Bantams. (See story) After standing on the sidelines all season, the Petite "C" moms took to the ice on Sunday, April 6 to challenge the girls to a game of ringette. Two dads and one sister made two full lines and we were ready. With sticks in hand we "'hit" the ice ready to show these girls how to play ringette. After a quick meeting to plan our strategy and a rowsing cheer by the Moms and Dads, the Referee "Dir- ty Dan' blew the whistle and the game began. The girls were whizz- ing around the ice passing and shooting in their usual fashion. The adults plodded along definitely lack- ing both skill and speed amazed at just how slippery that little rubber ring can be when you're trying to catch it, hold on and stay on your feet all at once! In goal for the Moms was Nancy Coyne, well equipped and sharp eyed, ready to stop any shot that came her way. Sarah Coyne, goalie for the girls, well practiced after the season's games was out to prove to her Mom that size doesn't always make the better goalie and that wearing skates in the net was a definite advantage. The ring passed quickly end to end, parents shooting, amazed when they scored and the girls confident that they were going to cream this team. The score favoured the parents for a while but with luck and a sharp ref on their side, the girls pumped in a few goals while the parents played short-handed due to penalties. With only a few minutes remain- ing on the clock it appeared as though the rarents might actually win. However, that scoreboard seemed to have a mind of its own. Final score 6-6 and the score sheet actually matched! Scoring for the Petites were Shan- non Brain 2 goals; Michelle Fitz- patrick 1 goal, Valerie Payne 2 goals; and Brandy Harris 1 goal. Assists went to Valerie Payne, Leea Kinnunen, Vicki Stainton and Melissa Pereman. Adding to the scoreboard for the parents was 'Happy Harris" 1 goal; "Agile Ann" 1 goal; "Sharp Shooter Sharon" 1 goal; 'Popper Del" 2 goals and 'Fearless Fitz" 1 goal. After the game all enjoyed "Piz- za and Pop" etc., etc. at the Coyne residence while reviewing the game and video thanks to Terry Coyne, the team photographer.
