The young Buckhorn area artist has a distinct yen for both, as her many pen and ink drawings il- lustrate. From saucy chickadees to stately mountain lions, she re- creates wildlife with impressive realism in intricate detail. Local art and animal lovers can appreciate her talents when she brings her collection to Scugog Memorial Library, on display until May 16th. From a distance her work ap- pears to be done in watercolours, but she's strictly a pen and ink ar- tist who employs coloured inks, a rare process she seldom sees used by anyone else. With delicate cross- hatching strokes, she transmits her feelings for animals and birds to paper, with impressive results. "All the animals that I draw are ones I have seen," she says. "My research is done sitting in the woods." She lives on three acres of land near Pigeon Lake, and her proper- ty is filled up with horses, cats, dogs and a variety of wild animals that come and go. She's on the Ministryof Natural Resource's list of people who are willing to take in injured wild animals, nurse them back to health, and release them. "You wouldn't believe how cute this deer is," she says with a grin. "My paintings are almost sac- charine, they're so sweet, but that's the way the deer looks." She tries to stay away from '"'cutesy animals' in her work, and in the process, ensures her subjects are inked as naturally as possible. "I have a freezer full of birds that I use to study and draw from," she says. 'But to do a decent job you need to see them in the wild." Art is all Christine does, and she approaches it like anyone else would approach a-nine-to-five office job. '""Art is discipline.
