Her magic wand isn't really magic at all-it's make-up, and Sue knows how to apply it in order to bring out any individual's best features. "I've always been interested in the Cinderella story, turning an ug- ly duckling into a pretty girl," she says. With seven years of professional make-up and skin care behind her (six of which she spent with cosmetic company Merle Norman), Sue has a wealth of experience with faces. She's done make-up for fashion shows, modelling portfolios, photo sessions, and has even created the make-up for music videos, in- cluding one for the band Nasty Habits. But when it comes right down to it, Sue would prefer to do make-up for someone who has never worn blush or eyeshadow, rather than a top-flight fashion model. "I always thought I'd like to do make-up professionally but when you work around it, you find out peo- ple are so snobby,"' she says, crinkl- ing her nose for emphasis. "I get more satisfaction helping people who've never used make-up before." For those reasons, Sue has struck out on her own and is now her own business out of the country home she shares with her musician boyfriend, Duncan Nicholson, and an extraordinarily large Great Dane, who regularly patrols the front yard wearing kerchiefs. "She's wearing a black one to- day," Sue grins, gesturing at the dog. "She was bad, weren't you?' The Dane merely looks up at her, yawns, and collapses on the grass. "I've learned so much about make-up and faces by doing so many things in the field," Sue says, to the conversation at returning hand. "I really like doing brides, for example." As with all customers, bridal make-up must really suit the person who is wearing it, Sue points out. .*'On your wedding, you want to be comfortable, you want to be relax- ed. You don't want to look like so- meone you're not," she says. 'On the other hand, a lot of brides forget about make-up, thinking only about their dresses and their hair. Make- up is a big part of your wedding pic- tures and not wearing it is like not wearing your shoes.' Although Sue wears make-up most of the time, she realizes it isn't a necessity for all people, all of the time. She says it is extremely im- portant for working women as it helps bring off a complete, polished business look. On the other hand, a full make-up might not be appropriate for a person you are." AUTO INSURANCE housewife, a police officer or a farmer. "You need the right look for whatever you're doing,' she ex- plains. "Just going out shopping, you don't need a lot of make-up but . then again, it depends on the kind of The key to good make-up, Sue says is perfect blending and mat- ching make-up colours to the colour '"'season" of your skin. Sue is train- ed in colour analysis and she in- variably applies this knowledge to a customer to make sure the cosmetics suit her best. The wrong colours can make a person look older, tired, and can give the illusion of bad skin, dull eyes and dull hair. The right colours do just the opposite. "The wrong colours can even make you feel bad," Sue says. '"After all, when you look bad, you tend to feel worse. You lose your confidence." Sue doesn't sell cosmetics, but she will recommend products to suit an individual's skin type. What she does offer is complete make-ups and skin care routines done at a person's - home, by appointment only. For more information, give Sue a call at 986-5577.
