Dr. Emerson Woodruff, a pro- fessor of optometry at Ontario's University of Waterloo, headed the study. The researchers took into ac- count such factors as the ~ thers' age, their smoking habits, their caf- feine intake, and their economic and cultural backgrounds. - Regardless of age, background, or other factors, the rate of eye pro- blems was higher for children born to mothers who smoked during pregnancy. Dr. Woodruff says 131 children out of every 1,000 born to non-smoking mothers, can be ex- pected to have eye problems, while the number increases to 240 out of 1,000 born to smokers. Problems such as far-sightedness, blurred vision, lazy eye, crossed eyes and bad eye co-ordination were more prevalent among the children of smokers, although the rate of short-sightedness didn't significant- ly differ between the two groups. Infants born to women 19 years of age and younger tended to be in a higher risk group regardless of the mothers' smoking habits, although not as high as the children of older mothers who smoked, Dr. Woodruff says. Smoking also increases the chances of a lower-than-usual birth- weight, Dr. Woodruff says. Cigarette smoke contains more than 3,800 chemicals; nicotine and car- bon monoxide are probably the most damaging. Nicotine causes blood vessels to constrict, so that blood flow is reduc- ed; consequently the fetus won't get all the nutrition required for its development. Carbon monoxide. reduces the amount of oxygen the blood can carry and hence the amount available to the fetus. "Certainly the nerves of the eye are extremely delicate at the time they undergo fetal development. It thus seems logical that if there isn't sufficient oxygen, this development may be in some way impaired." Dr. Woodruff says. Whether the mother was a heavy smoker or a light smoker made a difference as well. The risk of defects in children of light (1 to 10 cigarettes a day) and moderate (11 to 19 cigarettes) smokers was 1.5 times greater than that for children whose mothers did not smoke. But the risk level jumped to 1.9 times as great for heavy (20 or more cigaret- tes a day) smokers. The study serves a warning to parents about the dangers of smok- ing during pregnancy, Dr. Woodruff says. If the mother smoked during pregnancy, parents should have their children's vision checked ear- ly and frequently, since the earlier a problem is caught, the better, he adds. Dr. Woodruff also recommends that pregnant women should avoid frequenting smoke-filled environments. Local artist works judged Two new paintings submitted by Leslie A. Parkes successfully com-- peted with other entries from across Ontario last week in Collingwood. Both works are now on display as part of the 6th Annual Juried Art Exhibition at the Skelton Galleries in that city until May 10. The event is sponsored by the Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts. Earlier this month another pain- ting by this artist was equally honoured at another juried show in Brampton. A special presentation of several watercolours by Parkes continues at Port Gifts in Port Perry. Eye defect from smoking EA a ~ I BIER SO
