In early March, a group of Spanish buyers came to Canada 'with Solis to select the top-quality animals, which were purchased from breeders in Ontario. On March 20, 1986, the heifers em- barked on an 11-day voyage from Richmond, Virginia to Santander in northwestern Spain. It is unfor- tunate that the ship ran into four days of very heavy seas immediate- ly after leaving Richmond, making it a rough time for the animals. However, it was commented that when the 533 head (531 heifers, 2 males) were unloaded, the customers were extremely pleased with their purchases. After the animals were sorted, they made their way to their new homes across the country. In total, there were 19 buyers who acquired numbers anywhere from between 1 and 281. The largest number went to a large co-op named Acriva, in Cor- doba in southern Spain. In order to draw suitable attention to the shipment, a reception was held in Santander that was attend- ed by numerous key individuals con- nected with the shipment. Earl Osborne, Rockwood, President of the Holstein Association of Canada represented Canadian dairy farmers. Canadian Holsteins are very popular in Spain and, despite the decline in exports, this country has continued to receive technical assistance. Canadian judges have officiated at numerous national shows and judging schools. Cana- dian classifiers have visited Spain regularly to train and update Spanish classifiers of ANFE (Asociacion Nacional Frisona Espanola). In fact, this May, a com- petent experienced classifier, Grant Miller, Ottawa, will be in Spain to approve the three new ANFE Classifiers who have been training since January. Spain has also received technical assistance in the computation of sire type proofs. It is hoped that this shipment will pave the road for future ventures.
