The work of the Epsom Public School Accommodation Committee, made up of three local area residents plus one Greenbank area resident (to represent the school to which Epsom children would go if its school closed) culminated on Tuesday, April 22nd at a Property and Transportation Committee meeting of the Durham Board of Education. Although in February the Durham Board agreed to keep the school open, Don Simmonds, Chair- man of the Accommodation Com- mittee "never really viewed this decision as a tremendous achieve- ment, given the dreadful accom- modation problems in neighbouring schools." Since the Epsom Public School has been reviewed by the Durham Board several times in the last few Saturday, OSHAWA CIVIC AUDITORIUM 9AM. -- 1PM. -- 5PM TICKETS: Adults 5.00 Children *3.00 Available in Port Perry at: Don Forder Insurance - 30 Water Street Barry's Variety - 18 Water Street Dennis Anderson Chev-Olds - 268 Queen Street This message presented by the following businesses: years, the local committee group was intent on obiaining an official decision that would secure the longer term viability and stability of the school which is a landmark in the community. "This was the difficult area' says Beth Wilson, committee member. 'It was obvious that ten years ago the Board was consciously attemp- ting to close Epsom Public School and bus route changes made by Board staff since that time created a political dilemma when the Board considered restoring Epsom's original school boundary areas.' Jill Postma, another member of the committee adds "its also dif- ficult for the Durham Board which is made up mostly of Oshawa, Pickering and Whitby trustees, to fully understand issues relating to some of the smaller northern schools." "Our committee cut new ground when it had its own mandate extend- ed after several of its recommenda- tions were tabled at the first Proper- The Oshawa Shrine Club May 10th NONQUON TRAVEL 14 Water St, Port Perry 985-8431 GORD LEWIS MOTOR SALES 94 Water St., Port Perry 985-8091 THE EYE SHOPPE 28 Water St., Port Peny Lakeview Plaza 985.9388 PHILP PONTIAC BUICK LTD. 10 Vanedward Dr., Port Perry Ca ty and Transportation Committee meeting" Simmonds says. Trustee Debbie Tredway was instrumental in getting the Board to pass this mo- tion. Thus, giving the committee a voice in the final decision. In fact, Debbie Tredway has been a strong supporter and big encouragement throughout the whole political pro- cess and we are grateful for her tireless efforts to help our community. The heart of the problem arose from the Board policy which per- mits school boundary variation for smaller rural schools in accordance with the most practical bus routing methods. While on the surface this policy is logical, when the Board was trying to close Epsom, it simp- ly re-routed buses toward Prince Albert and other schools. Natural- ~ ly this resulted in marginal enrollments in Epsom threatening its future. (BY THE CAUSEWAY) N ~ 1A a --__ 8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 6, 1986 Epsom school rejoices over Board decision was tough politically in that it would cause an oulcry from families whose children currently attend Prince Albert from the Epsom boun- dary area. The Accommodation Committee was pleased at the com- promise worked out with Board staff, that enabled Epsom's original boundary areas to become official for new students, but not disrupt families within the area currently attending other schools. The committee feels that a private meeting held with Board Chairman Ruth Lafarga and Board Director Bruce Mather was in- strumental in producing the deci- sion, which satisfies all the parties involved. "We found the Board leadership most receptive and understanding of the dilemma" Wilson says. 'We had enough time to explain the en- tire situation and we are confident _--ox® these leaders (which are different than those involved when the Board was trying to close the school before) really do take an interest in the Epsom School and the type of education provided." The committee had to work much harder and longer than they ever ex- pected yet feel satisfied, that the result is a strong display of the way the democratic process should work. 'Its hard for busy politicians to keep track of all the issues in a given constituency' Simmonds remarked, 'but its gratifying when the democratic process unfolds to see a decision which serves the in- terests of all parties involved. If the newer regime at the Durham Board continues its work with that at- titude, it speaks well of the future of our education system in the Durham region." LANDSCAPING 18 Yrs.
