i # 4 3 | & § | i i Ambulance attendants prove they're tops! A lot of extra study and practise paid off for Kelly Sedore and part- ner Keith Kirkpatrick as they took top spot in an Emergency Care Competition held in Lindsay on April 27. Kelly is an ambulance attendant who has worked in Port Perry for the last 18 months. Keith, her part- ner in the competitions, works as an attendant in Lindsay, and both are employed by the Lindsay and District Ambulance Service owned by Bob DeShane. The Emergency Care Competi- tions attracted 11 ambulance teams from all over Ontario, including Toronto, Oshawa, St. Thomas and Bracebridge. The competition was designed to test the knowledge of the par- ticipants in all aspects of emergen- cy care, treatment of accident vic- tims at the scene, and the safe driv- ing of ambulances. Kelly told the Star last week that just to prepare for the competitions, she spent many hours studying theory and also practised on various scenarios four hours a night for three weeks prior to the competitions. She said her co-workers in Port Perry acted as victims, judges and critics in her preparation for the competitions. For the actual competition, all team members had to write an ex- am, take part in an 'ambulance rodeo' which tested driving skills, and respond to simulated emergen- cy situations. Those situations, called scenarios, included a head-on collision in which one of the 'victims' had been riding in the trunk of the car. Each team had just four minutes to find him. Another scenario involved a bom- bing inside a school. As teams treated the victims of the bomb blast, they learned that a second bomb was set to go off in a matter of minutes, and the team members had to make some very quick deci- sions to get the victims safely out before the second blast. To add a sense of reality to the competition, the victims were suitably made-up to show various injuries. Judging was very strict and the slightest mistake in any procedure meant lost points to the team. The judges were all professional am- bulance attendants and emergency care staff. For Kelly, winning this competi- - tion meant a great deal to her, and more than made up for all the extra time she put in preparing for it. She was one of just three females competing. She said it is nice to get the recognition of other professionals in this field, and also to let the public know the kind of work emergency care personnel can do in real life situations. "We sometimes get taken for granted by the public," she stated. Kelly, whose home town in Cann- ington, is a graduate two years ago from the Ambulance and Emergen- cy Care course at Niagara College. She has been working at the Port Perry station for the past 18 months.
