Increasingly, they are added onto houses to cut heating bills, and, at the same time, add welcome square footage. - A greenhouse addition can act as a natural solar "collector" and pro- vide appreciable heat gains from the sun. The key is a thermal mass that will absorb warmth from the sun, an slowly release and radiate it as the air cools in the evening. Ceramic tile happens to be a ter- rific thermal storage medium, especially in combination with a thick concrete slab. Ceramic tile on the floor is the most obvious use in solar greenhouses, but there are ways to gain extra thermal mass. If the greenhouse is a lean-to, its back wall may furnish additional storage. Dress, up a concrete block wall with handsome ceramic tile. SEAGRAVE NURSERY and LANDSCAPING Masonry planters, tiled to match the floor, and tile-topped counters will soak up the sun's rays, too. Using black, water-filled drums as bases for counter or potting tables will also up the room's thermal properties. | Some greenhouse additions harness more sun than-they need, and this heat can be used in adjoin- ing rooms. Doors and/or registers will circulate the air. And, remember that during the summer months the greenhouse floor and other thermal masses can also collect the night breezes to help cool the room. In order for the energy aspect to work well, the greenhouse must face the quadrant from southeast to southwest, and trees around the house should be considered. Deciduous trees that provide sum- mer shade are usually okay, but make sure that their branches don't obstruct too much winter sun. * Lambert Peat Moss * Flower & Vegetable * Hanging Baskets * Small Fruits * Lawn Decorations & Planters * Shade & Ornamental Trees --. * Flowering Shrubs * Roses & Cana pe L740 * Redwood Bark = 2F 2 3 Box Planters the world that some * R.R.
