That agreement could happen in "the very near future as there has been at least ohe meeting between the councils of the two municipalities over this and other issues. The Port Perry Unit of the Scugog Fire department responds to about seven calls per year (on average) from Mariposa, mainly the 65 homes in Robinglade Estates, east of Seagrave. Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor, told council Monday afternoon that an official with the Ontario Fire Mar- shall's office says the practise must stop until the two municipalities get together and work out a formal fire protection agreement. Without this formal agreement, the Scugog department has no legal liability protection beyond the boun- daries of Scugog Township. 5 Year Annual Interest 93/4" Rates subject to change without! notice the municipal savings & loan corporation ArPL "DON FORDER INSURANCE BROKERS LTD. | 30 WATER ST., PORT PERRY - 985-8471 RENT 7A & WATER * ¥ ¥ ¥ x x * * ROTOTILLERS LAWN MOWERS GENERATORS COMPRESSORS DOLLIES SCAFFOLDS HEAVY EQUIPMENT PUMPS PORT PERRY SAVE 2 GLASSES GAMES ( TABLES PARTY GOODS * ¥* 085-7771 TENT TRAILERS TRAVEL TRAILERS BOX TRAILERS ll AND MORE ... "I hate to say this, but our own department must be instructed not to respond to any calls (in Mariposa) Scugog Township could find itself in a very difficult legal situation,"' commented councillor Howard Hall at Monday's meeting. Residents of that area of Mariposa call the Port Perry department in the event of an emergency because the fire hall in Port Perry is closer than the one in Little Britain. Scugog Township has a formal agreement with the Uxbridge department for emergency calls in the northwest area of Scugog which is closer to Uxbridge than Port Perry. Scugog pays Uxbridge an annual retainer fee and a set amount of money for each fire call answered based on the number of men and equipment required to handle the emergency situation. It is expected that a similar agree- ment will be worked out with Mariposa Township to allow the Scugog department to respond to calls in that municipality. 100% PURE MAPLE SYRUP 2 WEEKS ONLY (141 oz.) (See story for details) oo Car thieves nabbed by alert witnesses Thanks to two brave witnesses, Durham Regional Police were able to apprehend a couple of juvenile car thieves. Police say the incident began May 30th at 4:45 p.m. in the parking lot of Duplate Canada in Oshawa. Employees watched from the win- dow as two young people broke into a car and started driving it away. - The employees hopped into their own car and followed the stolen "vehicle all the way into Port Perry where they managed to flag down a police officer. A short time later, Durham Police stopped the car and arrested the two-juveniles inside, at the corner of Lilla and Perfy Streets. The names of juvenile offenders are protected under the Youthful Of- fenders Act. LOVE SEAT STOLEN There won't be any love lost when police find the culprit who stole a love seat right off someone's back porch. A Major Street resident called Durham Regional Police when the seat was stolen, sometime during the night of May 27th.
