22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 17, 1986 Sports First defeat of year for Whitby Legion Gamblers chalk up two more wins Last Monday night in Greenbank Park, the Greenbank Gamblers stopped the Whitby Legionnaires in an exciting 5-4 contest. This mark- ed the first defeat of the year for the hard hitting Whitby team and it was a see-saw battle all the way with the lead changing hands different times. Ken Goreski was on the Gambler mound and kept the Whitby hitters in check for the full nine innings. Whitby had a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning when Don Phinney hit sharply to third base and the Whitby third baseman Kylie Kearns of Seagrave competed in girls 10 and 11 year old 400 metres event at the Colgate Womens Games over the weekend in Toronto and came home with a bronze medal for her fine efforts. Kylie ran a very respectable 68:65, less than two ~ seconds behind the winner. The 11-year old has been training hard for the Games, despite a recent bout with measles and bronchitis. The annual Colgate Games attracts some of the best female track and field competitors from all over Canada. Lady Luck not driving with Rivet at Montreal Lady Luck continues to play a role in the racing fortunes of Mike Rivet and his Dennis Anderson IROC Camaro on the Players Challenge circuit this summer. Two weeks ago at Mosport, Rivet was hampered by a minor technical problem in the engine that reduced his speeds, and then in Montreal this past weekend, a near collision almost knocked him out of the race. Rivet had the coveted pole posi- tion in the 42 car final over the twisting tract at Ile Notre Dam as part of the Labatt's Indy event. He was running with the top three cars on lap five when another car spun out of control in front of hime. Rivet had to take evasive action to avoid a collision and that put him way back in 13th position. But he recovered from that inci- dent and managed to make up enough time to finish a respectable 8th overall. Team manager Mike Rysiecki told the Star after the race that 'we were pleased with t'.2 showing, con- sidering what happened." Rysiecki had high words of praise for mechanic Rick Williams who had the car running "perfectly" to avoid the braking problem that plagued many of the Challenge drivers on the Montreal track. The 8th place finish at Montreal put Rivet 5th overall in the point standings after three events. He now has 190 points, and with five races to go is within striking distance of points leader Robin Buck (the John Powell team) who has 300. The next leg in the Players Challenge series will be June 28-30 at Mosport. Rivet is hoping that Lady Luck will change her tune and smile on the "Port Perry car." failed to come up with the ball.
