p-------- 26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 24, 1986 Port Perry Legion Squirt Softball team entered its first tournament of the season in Bracebridge on the weekend. The local team had to rise bright and early Saturday morning as the first game was scheduled for 8 a.m. against Cedar Hill of Scarboro. This game started out as a real pitchers battle as Jeff Card of Port Perry and Mike Henington of Cedar Hill, both were pitching a strong game until the fifth inning when Port Perry exploded for seven runs, Ladies soccer team on a tear A late update on the Senior Ladies Scugog Soccei' Team sponsored by David's Hairstyling of Port Perry. June 4 our team travelled to Ajax for our first league game. Due to a new season and new coaching we walked away with a 3-3 tie. Wendy Leask scored the first goal of the game. A beautiful goal! This goal was followed by one from Celia Williamson and Heather Agnew got the last one. June 9th Whitby came to visit us at the Scugog Soccer fields. The girls played a very organized game and ended up with a 8-0 win. Goals scored by Wendy Leask - 2, Kim Norton - 1, Laura Dobson - 2, Dana Forder - 2, Rhonda Martens - 1. June 16th was Ajax at Scugog. We played at the High School field and not only had to fight a strong Ajax team but also a strong wind. We came away with a 5-2 win. Goals scored by Dana Forder - 3, Terri O'Niel - 1, Celia Williamson - 1. June 18th David's Ladies travell- ed to Whitby to play under the lights with an 8:30 p.m. kick-off. The girls had their work cut out for them as the Whitby team played a challeng- ing team. David's Hairstyling won 4-0. Two goals scored each by Dana Forder and Terri O'Niel. Great goal- tending in first half by Eileen Gerber and second half by Laura Dobson. Wednesday the David's Hairstyl- ing Ladies will be playing the Ban- tam Flamingo Boys at the High School field. Jason Cochrane had a long home run and a single, while Steve Laird, Brad Moase, each had two hits, with Chad Ve.ning, Kent Jamieson, Jason McBride and Duane Empringham each one hit. In game two Port Perry had to play one of the tournaments strong teams, the local entry from Bracebridge. This game proved to be the most exciting one of the day. Jason Cochrane got things going for the Legion team as he hit a grand slam home run that put the team ahead by a 7-3 score until the sixth inning when Bracebridge scored 6 runs on some infield errors to take a 97 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Brad Moase started things off with a single, and Kent Jamieson then hit a home run helped out by a throwing error to tie up the game. Gavin Cochrane then singled and Midgets 'move fo 4th spot Port Perry Canadian Tire Midgets moved into fourth place in the Oshawa City and District Brady Division 9 team league with a 4-1 win over Mac Drywall of Oshawa last Wednesday night. Riding the one hit pitching of Dave Burnett the Port Perry squad scored 3 runs in the fourth inning to put the game away. Greg Warriner opened the inning with a long triple, and scored on a single by Dave Burnett who then was driven in by a hit from Lee Wilbur who scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Chris Cookman who also had a double in the sixth inning to drive in another run. Paul Cooper had Port Perry's other hit. In an exhibition game in Oshawa on Sunday Morning the Port Perry Tire boys defeated Oshawa Midgets 2-0 in a well played game. Craig Venning and Dave Burnett combined for a one hit victory as the local team continued its find play of late. Port Perry scored its two runs in the seventh inning when Lee Wilbur opened with a double and scored on Steve Durham"s single and even- tually scored on Jeff Ireland's single. Dave Culbert also had two hits for Port Perry. Duane Empringham, Greg Rankin, Jason McBride and Ryan Picard each had hits. Steven Desautels pitched five strong inn- ings for the win. Game three put the Legion team in against East Gwillumbury Township (Newmarket) and the boys knew a win would put them in- to the championship game. Port Perry scored 6 runs in the first inning and went on to a 8-6 win, with Steven Desautels again getting the win. Todd Smart and Jason Cochrane each had two hits, with Ryan Legion Squirts just miss in final game Picard, Scott Maclellan, Jason McBride, Jeff Card and Simon Traynor each getting one hit. Game four placed a tired but will- ing Port Perry team, in the cham- pionship game against Bramalea, a very big and experienced team. The Legion team put up a good battle as they only trailed by a 2-1 score until the sixth inning and end- ed up on the short end of a 4-1 score. Jeff Card pitched a strong game and Jason Cochrane added his 3rd home run of the tournament. Simon Traynor had Port Perry's other hits. The coaches, parents and players were quite excited and happy with the team's fine showing in this tour- nament and showed good sport- smanship and fine softball skills.
