Quarantine lifted for 20 dog rabies victims About 20 Port Perry families held "welcome back" parties last Friday morning. Their pet dogs had been allowed . out of quarantine, three months after they came in contact with a "dumb rabid" dog that touched off one of the worst rabies scares ever in Ontario. Dr. John Churchill, with the federal Health of Animals branch office in Bowmanville, told the Star Friday that 16 dogs belonging to families in the Cawker's Creek area and a few others elsewhere in Port Perry were released from quaran- tine on Friday. Two dogs, however, will have to spend anether three months in isolation. He explained that the dogs releas- ed Friday all had anti-rabies vac- cinations at least one month prior to when they came in contact with the rabid animal early in April. The two dogs that will spend another three months in quarantine had their rabies shots, but within four weeks of coming in contact with the rabid dog. Kallie, a yellow Lab owned by the Murphy family of Cawker's Creek was one of nearly 20 released from quarantine last Friday. The dog has spent three months in quarantine as a result of the 'serious rabies incident that swept through Port Perry earlier this year. Kallie was welcomed back into the family by Mrs. Alana Mur- phy and children Robbie, 7 and Ashleigh, 4. AVAILABLE APPROXIMATELY JUNE 17th All the dogs released from quarantine last week were inspected by Dr. Churchill and given an anti- rabies booster. The dogs had been kept in specially designed steel cages at the owners homes. They were the lucky ones. A total of eight family pets in Port Perry were put to sleep as a result of the rabid animal that made the rounds late in March and early April. Dr. Churchill said those dogs had not received rabies shots, and the ovners had the choice of putting them to sleep, or putting them in quarantine and taking a chance that the disease Would not show up in them. The rabies scare in Port Perry early this spring resulted in more than 100 people having to take the series of anti-rabies shots, 4s a pre- caution. The problem began over the Easter weekend when a dog with rabies roamed freely through Cawker's Creek subdivision and other areas of the community. That dog had what is known as "dumb rabies," showing no visible signs that are usually associated with the dreaded disease. It was later caught and diagnosed with rabies. Meanwhile the Health of Animals branch of Agriculture has released a new information pamphlet dealing with rabies. It contains a Section on how to recognize rabies in animals, including the difference between "dumb" and 'furious' rabies. The pamphlets are available from - the local Health of Animals branch in Bowmanville or by writing to Communications Branch, Agriculture Canada, Ottawa KIA 0OC7.
