Todd should know about talent as he has just qualified to compete in the World Top-Over Competitions to be held in Las Vegas later this month. The qualifying round took place at the Cayuga Top-Over Com- petitions where Todd placed 2nd in his class. Todd, who stands 6'6" tall and weighs in at 232 pounds says that strength and size is only a small part of what it takes to be a winner. The real winning combination is about 80 percent strategy and 20 percent strength. It was just about one year ago while at an armwrestling competi- tion in Little Britain Todd met Bob Ambrose, a long-time and highly achieved armwrestler. Bob saw potential in Todd and has been coaching him ever since. They set up a three year plan with the first year getting Todd some experience and working on his strength and technique. They hoped in the second year they could hone those skills fur- ther and qualify for the World Championships. Then the third year their target was to come-up in the top ten in the World Championships. With just a little more than a year under his belt Todd has been able to accomplish in one year what they had planned for two. Realizing that he will be up against the top com- petition in the world, Todd looks on the upcoming competition in Las Vegas as a learning experience. But there is an added incentive this year as the winner of the competition will receive a part in a new movie being produced by Sylvester Stallone "Over The Top." Stallone plays a truck-driving armwrestler in the movie, which is to be released in January. A Festival Days Armwrestling Competition will take place this Saturday, July 12 in the Festival Tent at the lakefront. The contest is sanctioned by the Ontario and Cana- dian Armwrestling Associations and is open to anyone wishing to compete. There will be six men's classes, one women's class and one class for left handed armwrestlers. Trophies will be presented to the winners of each class. Registration will take place outside the Festival Tent beginning at 2:00 p.m., with the competitions scheduled to begin about 3:00 p.m. Bob Armbrose says that arm- wrestling is really growing in popularity and is a big crowd pleaser. So if you are interested in competing or watching drop by the tent on Saturday afternoon. Tough competition puts Port on shelf Port Perry Canadian Tire Midget Softball team played well but were still eliminated early in the Ontario Softball Midget Elimination Tourna- ment held in Barrie on the weekend. Twenty-nine teams were entered in this three day event for the right to go to Western Canada in late August to represent the Province of Ontario. In game one on Saturday morning the local club met one of the stronger entries in the tournament, Branalea and dropped behind 5-1 after 3 innings. In the top of the sixth inning, Chris Cookman singled and Bob Orr and Steve Langille both got on base by errors, Dave Culbert then delivered a two run double to tie the game and send it into an ex- tra innings. The two teams then battled until the top of the tenth in- ning when Craig Menzies opened with a single which was moved along on a single by Orr and scored the winning run on a hit by Steve Langille. Steven Durham had 2 hits in the win with Greg Warriner and Lee Wilbur with ore hit each. The main story in the win was the strong pitching of Wilbur who came in relief for the 3rd inning and pitched 7 scoreless innings and also allow- ed only one hit. In game two the Canadian Tire boys played Nanticoke, a small village near Simcoe, Ontario and were completly shut out by a strong pitching performance by Dave Winger who didn't allow a hit and struck out 10 batters in a 4-0 win. In game number three, late Satur- day afternoon the Port Perry boys facing elimination met North York, Willowdale in a close and exciting 'game. North York lead 1-0 until the fourth inning when the local boys scored 2 runs on some shaky fielding and held on to a 2-1 lead. In the top of the sixth Brad Deasley hit a home-run to tie the game and two in- field hits allowed another run to score to give North York the win 3-2. Steve Durham had two more hits, with Dave Culbert and Bob Orr hav- ing one each. Craig Venning pitch: ed a strong game in taking the loss, allowing only 6 hits. The coaches were very pleased with the boys performance in this tournament and should do well when the O.A.S.A. playoffs come. - With victories over Greenbank, Oshawa Port Legion bounces back Port Perry Legion rebounded from some poorly played league games of late by downing arch rivals Greenbank 4-3 in 14 innings and the Oshawa Merchants 7-6. Against Greenbank, Port Perry was led by some fine pitching pro- vided by Ken Irvine. Coming in to throw in the 8th inning Irvine managed to keep the Gambler's off the scoreboard for the rest of the evening. The winning run was driven in by Larry Pilkey to cap off an exciting game enjoyed by all. In a see-saw affair last Thursday at home, Ken Irvine again picked up the win with some strong help from Lawrie Williams to preserve the win. During the game Larry Pilkey hit a long homerun in addition to playing a strong game defensively at shortstop. Paul Graham and Jay Williams had 2 hit games. |, On the July holiday weekend, Port journeyed to Haliburton to partake in the annual Bernie Nichols Fastball Tournament. After jump- ing off to a 9-0 win over Brougham (featuring Randy Underwood), Port dropped 2 in a row by identical scores of 3-1 to the Scarborough Juniors and the Oshawa Juniors. Even though the ball playing time was limited. A good time was had by all.
