--_ Ao PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 22, 1986 -- 19 French exchange student visiting Joe Pearson, of Torian Avenue in Brooklin, has just returned from a 15-day holiday in England. Not too exciting for many, but for Joe it was a trip of a lifetime, particularily since he had a chance to "chat" with Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, who are pro- bably the most talked-about twosome in the world at the present time. Hob-nobbing with royalty Trip fo remember We have a celebrity in our midst in the person of Joe Pearson of 56 Torian Avenue. He might not have visited the Queen during his recent visit to Lon- don, England, but he did the next best thing. He spoke with Prince An- drew and Sarah Ferguson, who's impending wedding on Wednesday has the whole of England, if not the world i n a minor frenzy. Seventeen-year-old Joe recently returned from a 15-day trip to England as part of a contingent from Variety Village. The spina bif- fida victim has been a member of Variety Village for some time and was one of the 17 young people, three coaches and two police of- ficers with the Metro force to make this inaugural trip. Last year, a group of English han- dicapped children paid a visit to Canada, staying at the Variety Village, and this year, it was the Canadians' turn to make the return visit. According to Joe, the program will be an ongoing one, with ex- changes made each year on an alternate basis. The group stayed at The Lord Mayor Treloar College, located near Alton, Hampshire, just outside Lon- don. Treloar is an orthopaedic hospital and college, founded in 1908, and is a co-educational facili- ty for young people suffering from cerebral palsy, spina biffida, haemophilia, fragile bone and heart conditions, epilepsy, chronic juvenile arthritis and muscular dystrophy. Although Joe was selected because of his extensive involve- ment with wheelchair sports through Variety Village, he was sur- prised there was no physical par- ticipation while he was in England. "It turned out to be just a big holi- day and it was great," said Joe ad- ding the group saw the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, visited Winchester Cathedral, Soho, Picadilly Circus, and went on a boat tour of the Thames River. Much to the chagrin of Joe's mother, Josephine, the young lad neglected to print one word in the trip diary she purchased for the oc- casion, and now has difficulty recalling exactly where he went and when. "We went all over the place and visited lots of museums and things," he laughed ** ... all I know is that we were busy all the time ... there wasn't enough time to write everything down." But one thing he does recall vivid- ly is his encounter with Prince An- drew and his lovely bride-to-be. "They both asked me where I was from and how I was enjoying my stay in England ... they are both charming and Fergie is beautiful," said Joe, "She isn't fat and frumpy (Turn to page 37) Ashburn and Area News by Rose Heron Those who were not able to be at Burns Church last Sunday morning . missed a lovely treat when Laurie Gemmell, Marilyn Kendall and Christine Bryce sang a lovely trio entitled 'Let There be Peace on Earth." Also during the service Laurie played the Harp. She played beautifully a number called the "Brook." The Bible tells us to Praise the Lord with our voices and with the Harp and it's wonderful when young people do just that. Rev. Gemmell was the guest minister and he took his text from St. Mark and James 'entitled 'Who do People say that I am." Rev. Gemmell also told the children why the words of the much loved hymn "Jesus Loves Me" were changed in our book of praise, something we older ones were glad to learn about also. Next Sunday Rev. Dorothy Ashe is angered by new boundary changes George Ashe, Member of Parlia- ment for Durham West is angered by the move that cuts the Brooklin area from the rest of Whitby. On provincial riding maps, the in- clusion of the new riding of Durham Centre has severed Durham West at Taunton Road, placing Brooklin, Ashburn and Myrtle in the Durham East riding, and placing the area south of Taunton Road in the new riding "I am still convinced that what the Electoral Boundaries Commis- sion did was wrong,"' said Ashe, "It took many years to bring Whitby together as a town, to get the north and the south together, and then some commissioner cuts it in half...nobody ever spoke in favour of it." The new riding will encompass all of Whitby south of Taunton Road continuing into Oshawa where it is bounded by Ritson Road, Highway 2 and Taunton Road. Durham West under the auspices of Ashe, will take in all of Ajax and Pickering. That leaves the North Ward now a part of Durham East which encompasses the remainder of Oshawa north of Taunton Rd. and Newcastle. Before the change in boundaries, Durham West was the fifth largest riding in Ontario, making it hard to manage according to Ashe. But los- ing Whitby from:his riding is upset- First choice applications Mel Garland, President of Durham College, announced today that first choice applications for September 1986 are equal to last year when Durham led the college system in percentage increase for ° first year enrollment. Out-of-area applications have so far shown a decrease over last year and Technology programs are 15 percent to 18 percent below last year. This in spite of the fact that de- mand for Technology graduates is at an all-time high. Mr. Garland further stated that all Health Sciences programs, as well as Sport Administration, Legal Administration, Graphic Design, and Early Childhood Education, are all full as usual. Mr. Garland add- ed there is room in all remaining programs in Applied Arts, Business, and especially Technology at this time. College staff are prepared lo assist applicants with program selection and the identification of career opportunities for each of these programs. Durham graduates last year enjoyed a 94 percent place- ment rate. ting to Ashe as that is where he has always received the most constant support. Sam Cureatz, also a Conservative, is the present MPP for Durham: East, of which the North Ward is now a part. Bulmer will be our guest minister. We are glad to report Bernice Gardner is able to be home. We all hope she will continue to get well. Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Sidney Emm on their 50th Wedding Anniversary. The family have in- vited friends & neighbours to join ° them at the home of their son, Tony and Sharon Emm next Friday even- ing July 25th from 6 to 9 p.m. Just bring your best wishes. What a wonderful opportuni- ty young people have these days to make friends even all over the world. Ted and Rose Heron attended a Sister and Brother Christmas in Ju- ly reunion at the home of Georgina Cromie at Baldwin last week. Lois Daw spent a few days with her sons family Brian & Debbie and girls Amy and Katy at Woodstock. Art & Margaret Mathews, also Muriel Fisher visited with Margaret & Frank Mitchell for a few days recently. There is nothing nicer to share with someone than friendship - have a good week.
