Success ingredients are unlimited for shop owner Lyn Sparling and Marion Murray were both looking for new jobs. And both found exactly what they were . looking for. For the last six years, Marion has run Ingredients Unlimited, the cozy, spicey scented shop at the bottom of Queen Street in Port Perry. Together with three other people, she started the business after talk- ing with representatives of the Federal Business Development . Bank about what Port Perry "real- ly needed." + The bank suggested a bulk food store so the four partners readily complied and opened Ingredients Unlimited in the location of a former hair-dressing salon (at one time the shop also sold lingerie). And then in February 1981 Marion bought the store outright and has run it on her own ever since, work- ing six days and up to 80 hours a week. "I was just plain tired,"' Marion says. Lyn, on the other hand, was ac- tively seeking a new work challenge and approached Marion several times about it. "Lyn was looking for a job and I always said if I got offered the right price, I'd sell," Marion recalls. And sell she did, on June 20th. After a final good-bye celebration a. the store on August 7th, Lyn took over August 8th, last Friday. Purple hill reunion is planned Five years ago when the first Pur- ple Hill School re-union was held a large number of teachers and students, their spouses and families gathered at the school. Much visiting and renewing old friend- ships was enjoyed. - Another re-union is being plann- ed for Sunday August 24 when all are invited to return. What secrets will be revealed? Five years ago one teacher discovered who had stolen his strap fifty years ago. The re-union will begin begin at 1 - p.m. at the school. After a tour and pictures, the chattering group will proceed to the Blackstock Recrea- ~ tion Centre for a short programme (anyone with recitations, etc. bring them along) followed by a potluck dinner. So bring your pictures, some food for supper and your memories to the Purple Hill Re-union on Sun- day August 24. For information call Joyce Kelly 986-4257 or Herb Swain at 986-5217. Tell yout friends and come to Pur- ple Hill. See you there! While Lyn says she is 'really ex- cited" about her new business, Marion is looking forward to an of- fice job in Whitby, but not without a fair share of regrets. "For a long time I'll feel very mis- _ ty about leaving," she says. "That's the hard part, leaving all the people I've come to know. If I had second thoughts, that's what they would be. " During the time she ran the store she met many people she eventual- ly became good friends, as well as several customers who were ge- nuine celebrities. A couple of Metropolitan Opera stars became frequent customers, as did a member of Interpol. Larry Solway visited the store often to buy his favourite treat, candied ginger, and his wife Louella Fitzgerald always bought mixed nuts. Marion's biggest seller, however, were vitamins, the "bread-and- butter' of her business. But she did sell an incredible variety of other goods, including a huge selection of bulk foods, herbal teas, yogurt, and even cosmetics. But the mainstays of her business, were "health food' items, something Marion admits she was never really interested in personally. "I'm more interested in medicine," she says. "I would like to have been a nurse or worked in a lab. I guess I'm not terribly nutri- tion conscious, so I had some homework to do when I took over the store." Lyn won't hake those problems. Already an avid natural foods fans, she has a solid knowledge of the items in the store and has taught related cooking classes. "Lyn will be great at the store," Marion says. The only problem Lyn might have, as Marion had, will be trying to explain what Ingredients Unlimited is to people who have never been in the store. Marion was asked by a member of the Chamber of Commerce to describe her store, and after she - tried to explain, she gave up and said simple, 'You'll have to come in and see for yourself." The name really does sum up ~ what the tiny store contains.
